Commission plans to stretch out both free allocations and auctioning, which would slow planned emissions cuts from European industry, writes Handelsblatt
EU Commission to propose free emissions allowances for industry beyond current cut-off period – media report
The European Commission plans to propose extending free CO2 allowances for industry under the Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) beyond the agreed cut-off period, business daily Handelsblatt reported, citing senior EU officials. In a deal from December last year, member state governments and the European Parliament had demanded that the Commission proposes to revise the ETS in a way that would allow for a limited amount of emissions after 2039, and "considers a slower phase-out pathway for free allocation of allowances from 2028 onwards."

Abolishing fixed support for rooftop solar could jeopardise expansion in Germany – analysis

Abolishing fixed support for rooftop solar could jeopardise expansion in Germany – analysis
The German economy ministry is discussing the abolition of support in the form of feed-in tariffs for small rooftop solar power systems, which could significantly reduce private investment in such systems and slow down the expansion of solar energy, found an analysis by research institute Fraunhofer ISE. The ministry led by conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) minister Katherina Reiche instead wants to introduce mandatory direct marketing, arguing that the technology has matured enough to compete without state support.

German govt says gas supply secure despite low storage levels and cold temperatures

Spokesperson for economy ministry confirmed that gas supply is secure and that there is enough LNG available on the global market to get through winter without problems
German govt says gas supply secure despite low storage levels and cold temperatures
Gas storage levels have dropped to just above 30 percent in Germany due to cold temperatures throughout January, but economy minister Katherina Reiche said the low filling level is no cause for concern, reported newspaper Die Zeit. Besides having a secure pipeline supply from Norway, which in 2025 covered nearly half of Germany's gas demand, the country also has the possibility of importing liquefied natural gas (LNG), Reiche said. A spokesperson for the economy ministry confirmed that gas supply is secure and that there is enough LNG available on the global market to get through winter without problems.

EU critical raw material recycling below levels needed to reach supply security targets – auditors

CRM Act from 2024 includes a non-binding commitment to obtain 25% of all CRM needed for the energy transition through recycling
EU critical raw material recycling well below levels needed to reach supply security targets – auditors
The recycling of critical raw materials (CRM) needed for renewable energy technologies in the EU fails to exploit its potential for ensuring greater supply security, the European Court of Auditors (ECA) has said in a new report. From the 26 raw materials the EU defined as critical for the energy transition, seven were found to have recycling rates between 1 and 5 percent, and ten materials are not recycled at all. The EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act from 2024 includes a non-binding commitment to obtain 25 percent of all CRMs needed for the energy transition through recycling.
