Seattle about to find out if this is true.
The presidency, governorships, and mayors' offices are not entry-level positions.

Yet another example of squandered soft power.
It wasn’t literally representative of western life - quite weird (complimentary) overall… but also kinda got the gist of it. I (a westerner) liked it specifically because it was so weird.

Happy no-street-sweeping-in-Seattle-ever (the most verdant city in the country!) day to all those who celebrate!

Enjoy those clogged drains and overflowing gutters, you only have another 200 days left this season!

2025 Yankees.
Just friendly advice for the Dodgers fans: most fans of other teams are going to be rooting for the Jays no matter what, embrace the villain role and you will be much happier than trying unsuccessfully to convince everyone else that the Dodgers are the heroes everyone should root for

I read all of Dante’s Inferno in a little more than a day ahead of the final exam. I don’t remember the exact grade but it was adequate. There was no AI and Clif’s Notes would not have cut it. Had to read the whole thing.
I wrote my take-home final for Law of War at 4 a.m., still half-drunk. It was due at 9 a.m. I got a B, which was my school's equivalent of taking you behind the barn and shooting you. It dropped my honors one level. My father was perturbed.
I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

I know of several people running windows 7!

Planned obsolescence should be illegal!
An under-the-radar but huge story: in less than 2 weeks, Microsoft plans to end support for the Windows 10 operating system, which is currently used on 42% (!) of all PCs globally. Over 400 million computers will be vulnerable to hacks or destined for the dump if users don't pay up.
Microsoft Is Abandoning Windows 10. Hackers Are Celebrating.
The company will stop supporting the OS on October 14. Advocacy groups warn this will leave up to 400 million computers vulnerable to hacks or in the dump.

Pretty wild that after 158 games of baseball it still come down to the last 2 or 3 to determine the best 6 teams in each league. Still lots of movement. Crazy!

Not the point of the thread but another great example of how allowing the railroads to build track right along the waterfront of the entire cascade corridor was a multi century mistake, cutting off everyone from one of the greatest resources in the region for the benefit of one company.
Indeed. Seattle used to produce maps of which downtown streets had the most people walking on them to help accurately price real estate

Chart crime o’clock.
Good map to show my personal view that the only US metro areas pursuing serious urbanization recently has been Seattle—besides the already-super-dense NYC MSA, it's the only one that's significantly densified over the last 20 years. DC, Boston, and Portland can get honorary mentions though

This is basketball in general. It is by far the worst sport. Every game should just be 2 mins long, final score 4-3. Yay. Wasn’t that fun.
At this point it feels like every other WNBA game is decided on the final possession and whether they happen to win or lose them in a given stretch determines whether a team is "hot" or "cold."

A reporter can write about, and get clicks/make money, covering chaos.

The steady grind of administrative progress is hard to cover, boring and does not make money for the reporter.

They need and want chaos to make money. This 100% how we got Trump 2.
One thing that has sort of surprised me is that it does really seem like the desire to be ruled by a powerful fascist daddy is stronger in the median elite journalist than in the median voter.

I’ve thought for awhile now that there is over employment in tech / software and a lot of “product releases” are completely unnecessary tasks the devs come up with to justify their existence.

The US’ greatest exports are:
1. Tertiary education
2. Research and Science production
3. Data collection, reporting and statistics credibility
4. Culture: movies, tv mostly but also fashion. USAID+soft power influence is in here.

And this admin has made it its singular focus to destroy all 4.
We have had stable, professional, vouchsafed information about the physical & economic world for so long that we entirely take it for granted. It's going to be truly wild to operate in a world where quite literally no one knows for sure what is happening, where there is no fact of the matter.

People are only now realizing you can actually landscape your curb strip? “Area couple learns flowers are prettier than dirt”. This is a bizarre article.
Three years ago, one Colorado couple turned the dull strip of turf between their sidewalk and the street into a garden. Since then, they estimate, 10 houses in their 154-home development have followed suit.

That skinny patch of earth between street and sidewalk can be dull as dirt or the envy of your block. Here’s how to make it gorgeous.
