The flood warnings that save lives
When floods hit, getting clear, timely warnings out to people becomes lifesaving, but too often these messages fail. The BBC asks disaster experts about how to get it right.

The REMUS REU group got to launch a weather balloon at UNCC yesterday. Shout out to @wxkylegillett.bsky.social for the quickly-generated and absolute beautiful skew-T analysis plot. If you’re not using SounderPy you need too!

The FY26 budget proposal is planning on decommissioning our satellite systems at L1 (ACE / DSCOVR) making us completely blind to incoming space weather from the Sun until SWFL becomes operational. Please call your representatives.

It's not just #NIH. It's not just #NSF. It's not just #NASA.

The whole scientific community has to make clear that all science across fed agencies is being destroyed in the US.

We can't just ask for our particular piece of the pie. The whole pie is being thrown out - saving your bit won't work.

✨There’s still time to share your voice in the 2025 NSF Unidata Community Survey, closing June 20!✨
Help shape how we support the Earth sciences community. The survey should take no more than 15 minutes, and will really help us understand your needs.

NWS meteorologists will do everything they can to uphold the NWS mission and save lives despite already being stretched so thin. The government needs to stop treating them as our enemies.
cnn.com CNN @cnn.com · May 19
As a severe weather outbreak became increasingly likely Friday, meteorologists at the National Weather Service office in Jackson, Kentucky, made the decision to call everyone in and staff the overnight shift, according to Tom Fahy, who represents the NWS Employees Union.
Short staffing at NWS in Kentucky did not affect tornado warnings for deadly storms, union says | CNN
The Jackson, Kentucky, office is one of at least four such facilities across the country that is so short-staffed that it is no longer routinely operating 24/7.

It truly does take a village to do the impossible job of raising good-natured, healthy, and inspired children 🩷
gracias to the village
the aunties, godmamas,
next-door saints
who never stop loving
on birthdays,
on breakdowns,
on every in-between.

you held us
when life got heavy,
raised us
even when we weren’t yours

happy mother’s day
to the women who built us
with grace,
with grit,
with love that don’t quit
