a linguistics student trying to figure things out. he/she/they

as i read more linguistics research papers i'm getting better at deciphering academia speak, which means it's really hilarious when i get to a section where it's clear the authors of the research paper are very fed up and dissing other papers

Happy New Year, everyone. May the Year of the Snake bring prosperity and an end to evil times.

I have good news and bad news about my forthcoming book, Chinese Characters Across Asia.

Good: It is completely done and in production!
Bad: The official publication date has slipped to March 4.

Have you ever read something in Irish and thought "how the hell do I pronounce that?" Well you can type any sentence in Irish into this site and hear it back in 3 different dialects! So bloody cool it's helped me a lot lately. www.abair.ie/ga

A good reminder that centralized digital collections present new, major security risks for organizations. Digitization is not preservation.

3yo, playing hide and seek: "Now we all hide!"

Both me and his dad: "But who will find us?"

3yo, pensively, after much thought: "We will find ourselves."

After nearly a lifetime of not speaking Yiddish, my ninety-year-old grandfather remembered the following very useful words and phrases:

- “Nu, vos den?” YEAH, SO WHAT, WHAT ABOUT IT

- How to count from one to five

- The word for CANDY STORE

Update! It’s pronounced motorpɪ́t instead! Still no concrete info on the origins, but now the leading theories are that it’s from the Dutch motorfiet (with a substitution of fi to p because fi doesn’t exist in Chinese) or that it’s onomatopoeic to the beep of a motorcycle (pɪ́t, pɪ́t)!
#linguistics #langsky twitter: odd question, but does anyone know where the word motorbik (pronounced motor-beek or bɪ́k) come from? It apparently refers to motorcycle in Medan Hokkien but doesn’t seem to come from Teochew, Hokkien, Indonesian or Malay — or even Dutch.

Each class I ask my Intro Ling students to share tasty linguistic morsels they notice around them. One from today was a student observing that W and L usage moving from nominal ("take the L") to more adjectival ("that's a W car")
