My dad's a polyglot. It's what he relied on in his journalism career. He speaks 9 languages. It's why I am so ashamed that I only speak 2 languages. I always envied my dad's ability to pick up a language in less than 2 to 3 years.

In reality this country, like the rest of the new world, was always a polyglot multiethnic society. The fact the American right are trying to ape European fascists and pretend America had the ethnic makeup of Iceland prior to the 1965 Immigration Act is deeply strange.

There's a fierce annoying strain of language YouTubers who do this 'speak from day 1' bollocks which is basically just 'harass native speakers of that language into being your teacher by weaponising their politeness against them'.

9. Almost conversely, if you meet a native speaker who doesn't really want to speak Irish to you, try not to take it personally - there's a lot that comes with being a native speaker of a minoritised language and it's rarely if ever a reflection on your abilities.
