Confession: I have never in my decades of knitting used needle tip cover thingies. (I don't even know what they're called!) Granted, I don't use DPNs, so that helps a lot. But I've always just pulled the project onto the cable of my circulars and thrown it into my bag like a gremlin. 🙊

I've known for years that I wanted to knit my own wedding dress. And I've been casually prepping for this moment.

I already had a few general ideas:
- Backless
- Lacy
- Big, flowy skirt
- Rewearable after the wedding

I've been knitting lace for years, so those skills are on lock.

But

Back in 2023, I made this shawl for mi suegra, and she ✨loves✨ it. She wears it all winter & enjoys telling me how many people ask her where they can buy one 🤣 Then she caught it on something and thought it might be broken, so she had to put it away for the season 😭

Courage isn't something that some people are magically born with that others lack. It's something we can cultivate. Make a practice of doing small things that scare you, so you're ready when it's time to do the big things.

A few months ago, I said I was going to start filling my wardrobe with handknits.

🧶 I made a crop top sweater. It went great.
🧥 Moved on to a cardigan. Almost done with the sleeves, & it's great.
🧦 Halfway through my first pair of colorwork socks

I love remembering I have free will. (I've decided to paint the ceiling of my art studio.)

I recently picked up a pair of socks that I started knitting... two years ago? I got about a third of the way through the second sock before I stopped 7 the project bag disappeared in the depths of my studio. But it as reemerged, and by golly I'm going to finish this sock. Better late than never!

Has anyone ever done an online knitting circle or online knitting class? If yes, how did it go?

I intend to leave this life

there’s gonna have to be

One of our “green new scam” research grants that USDOT terminated focused on making transit infrastructure more resilient to more frequent and severe weather events. But “climate change adaptation” was too woke, obviously, and doing this research is clearly unnecessary

Working in tech right now is just like, "okay, how do I find a way to insert an LLM into this workflow?" Does it need it? Is it actually a beneficial improvement? Who cares! 🫠

NEW from me — FEMA staffers say the response to the Texas floods is horrifyingly slow, and it may be because of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem's recent increased control over how the agency spends money.

"If this is how they are going to do a major hurricane response, people are fucked.”
FEMA response to deadly Texas floods delayed & deficient with Noem in charge

good thread on how media is reporting on the role that alerts played in the Texas floods
If you read this NYT piece carefully it doesn't actually say what people seem to think it says (though it suggests it and encourages the interpretation a whole lot of people come away with).
The United States government is no longer able to protect us from real hazards, such as flash floods, because it’s shifting funds to fake hazards, such as a non-existent immigrant crime wave. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/05/u...

Has there ever been a person who lost an election but came out of it a winner in the way Brad Lander has? This interview is great and showcases all the things that make him the guy he he is: tough, smart, funny, kind... a true mensch.
"They lit $20 million on fire, and all it did was boost Zohran's numbers. And in no small part because they corrupted their own souls by supporting a person they know to be a corrupt, abusive asshole. What are they gonna do now?"

@bradlander.bsky.social, the man you are.

I don't expect Ketterling or the people who have made both-sides-need-to-calm-down their whole career to change; but the story is the violent radicalization of the american right driven by anti-abortion rhetoric in churches. that's the story. decades of domestic terrorism fueled by this rhetoric.

EXTREMELY ANNOYING

The climate movement spent millions of $ over decades focusing on just transition, helping displaced workers, yet climate action still gets broadly criticised as causing 'job losses'

Tech bros pop up saying "I WANT TO DESTROYJOBS ASAP" and get a glowing write-up in the NYT

It challenges conventional sustainable investing and urges asset owners to confront climate change as a systemic threat to the global economy and long-term portfolios.

More people should be talking about the utter freak that is Stephen Miller and his white nationalist worldview. He's the architect behind most of this chaos as Trump is golfing, falling asleep during meetings, making money of memecoins and tripping while climbing stairs.

"who was president in 2020" remains the most difficult question in the world for a sizable chunk of americans, professional commentators included
The mainstream/centrist punditocracy seems to exist in an alternate universe around discussing protests where 1) BLM happened while Joe Biden was President and 2) it resulted in an electoral wipeout for Dems
