HUMAN VOICE ACTORS

“Dialogue is a perfect opportunity for this kind of play; every time we speak, there is a moment of uncertainty — will our intention be understood, rebuffed, accepted, acknowledged? If we are lying, we will persuade, confuse, or offend?”

I haven’t seen it posted anywhere but the half day rate for a voice actor is like $550 and the full day is $1100. So Embark is bailing on this cost line item for something that would run them like $15,000 a year per language.
For Arc Raiders to ride the wave of human sociability all the way to the bank, while also being so contemptuous of the thing that makes us social animals in its own workflow demonstrates a lack of artistic integrity that I find impossible to ignore.

I cannot state how utterly depressing it is that the current EIC of Zombie Waypoint is an unironic Doc Squiddy stan.

Unsupportable.

You know what: yes.

Arc Raiders is enormously enjoyable but its use of shitty AI voices is not just antithetical to its themes, it's a disgusting compromise that threatens the integrity of certain parts of the industry.

This is an incredibly well considered review with an appropriate score.

Related to that absolute nonsense currently doing the rounds, here's a good, pocket sized piece on why dialogue choices are, you know, good, from someone who actually knows his stuff.

Gosh, if only someone had already covered how to use choices to build subtext is a characterful linear scene already, in a talk that takes less time to read than a medium post from a guy who seems to have only played one game and that’s cos he wrote it

The successor to GZDoom is out now, after GZDoom's lead developer decided to start 'vibe coding' with AI.

For those worried, this should perform EXACTLY the same as GZDoom. Probably better, and with improving compatibility as there's more people actively working on it and listening to the community
The pre-release for UZDoom's debut is here! If you'd like to help us test UZDoom in preparation for 4.14.3 grab the build here: github.com/UZDoom/UZDoo... (expand the Assets tab)

(Windows and Linux available; Mac coming later)

marginalised developers are among the poorest in the industry, but were expected to pay for their own tickets to their token inductions (not even talking travel+accom)

A note about the TGAs worth remembering as this Future Class story unfolds: it’s a marketing beat, consumer-facing, and voted on by media/influencers. Developers are, by design, not included or considered in the structure. Which feels bad! www.polygon.com/explained/49...

EXCLUSIVE on @gamedeveloper.bsky.social: not only has The Game Awards not nominated a Future Class for 2025, it's told alumni it "does not have any active programming plans" for the award.

The Future Class page was taken down sometime this year—eliminating a definitive archive of honorees.
The Game Awards' Future Class program remains on ice
Future Class organizer Emily Weir has informed past honorees that The Game Awards has no active plans for the program.
