I have a beloved family member who got polio just a couple years before the vaccine arrived. She has lived a long life with severe post-polio effects. Nearly all her siblings still voted for Trump
Me: Dr. Salk your vaccine will save so many children!

Salk: Well thank God

Me: Of course they will grow up

Salk: Well I hope so

Me: And get old

Salk: I guess?

Me: And eventually vote for lunatics who will try to stop your vaccine

Salk: what now

Me: And leave NATO

Salk: shit

Important little thread 🧵
To everyone in a similar scenario: the tactic my doctor's office has taught me is to ask, in writing, for:
1) the name, board specialty, and license number of the doctor making the determination the treatment was not medically necessary;

We wanted to understand what’s going on in South Korea. So we talked to three Joe Rogan listeners at an Arby’s in Harrisburg

The unnerving wait to figure out which side ends up being correct about this
LGBTQ activists: They're definitely going after Obergefell.

Many pundits and reporters: Stop being melodramatic with these exaggerated claims.

Them: We're definitely going after Obergefell.

Please be mindful this season of people who are often forgotten during the holidays: people who prefer cake over pie. We deserve to be merry, too.

Take a moment and consider how many people had to sign off on the name for Capri Sun’s 2013 holiday flavor.

yes. we need a rhetorical discussion of actual bias (spoiler: it’s neoliberal all the way down) and ditch these false left-center-right metrics from well-meaning journalist aggregators
I love NPR—yet I'd like to see journalism of the sort below end.

Don't pretend Americans disagree on an issue when half are just ignorant.

What we learned this year is that Americans have no idea what's going on with crime. If it drops, they think it's going up. If it's up, they think it's way up.

The country is at odds over how to approach intractable issues such as crime, addiction and homelessness. In Pittsburgh, an unlikely pair of firebrands talk across the political divide.

My one constructive criticism on BlueSky, as a community: we need to “like” less and “retweet” more. In the absence of an algorithm, that’s the way we find each other and reward good content.

The audiobook nonsense argument is pretty bad & there’s no need for it, but Naomi hit this point right on the nose.
I see we’re having that nonsense argument again, about whether #audiobooks are ‘real reading’. I’d like to shift the conversation to the question of why so few academic books are available in audiobook format. Because it seems to me that the former attitude is closely connected to the latter.
