"World's first potential trillionaire has killed 600,000 people, including 400,000 children" is the only headline that anyone should ever read about Elon Musk
One analytical model shows that, as of November 5th, the dismantling of U.S.A.I.D. has already caused the deaths of 600,000 people, two-thirds of them children. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/jUzNSc

There is so much power in grand stories that make sense of the world, reveal our role and connect us to a greater purpose.

The story Mamdani has been telling isn't new--that we have the means to provide for all, that everyone deserves dignity--but he's bringing it to life, making it kinetic.

I dislodged the thing that was stuck in the snake’s throat. It was a red-belly newt (Cynops pyrrhogaster) which is known to have tetrodotoxin. The snake probably succumbed to the toxin while trying to eat. Tokikubo, Komoro, Nagano #Herps #Snake #Newt

A shocking find. Dead snake which turns out to be Japanese pit viper or mamushi (Gloydius blomhoffii). It seems to have choked on something it was trying to swallow. Tokikubo, Komoro, Nagano #Herps #Snake

As many have pointed out, Mamdani didn't stand apart from our trans brothers and sisters. He didn't play the "Gee, gosh, it sure is complicated," milquetoast moderate card. And he crushed.

The way forward is together, not over the bodies of our own.

Jon was deeply kind and caring, and his love for his community was clear from the first time we met. He worked hard to support institutions he found worthy, but never put institutions over people.

Our community is so much less for his loss, but the good he did will carry on.
Mourning the loss of Jon Lasser, Seattle SFF community stalwart and new friend and colleague. The world has lost a deeply generous and compassionate human and talented author.

You'll be missed.

Genocide is not just the mass killing of people. It has a legal definition.

Here’s a brief video I made a while back to explain genocide vs ethnic cleansing under international law:

Today, the UN officially designated Israel’s assault on Gaza as a genocide.

As a party to the Genocide Convention, the U.S. has a legal obligation to obey our own laws, stop weapons sales to Israel, and demand a permanent ceasefire.

End the genocide. Ceasefire now.

So here are my suggestions if you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to pronounce names in an official capacity.

1. Read them ahead of time.
2. Ask for help
3. Forvo.com is a great resource
4. Slow down, and use falling tones to give extra gravitas.
5. Apologize and own mistakes

Backcountry congee was a total fail this last #backpacking #ultralight trip. I expected Minute Rice to break down eventually, but there was no difference in firm-ish texture from a couple of minutes of simmering to 10+ minutes.

The shiitake & chicken bullion broth was so good tho.

To the many who enjoyed the natural beauty I shared from my backpacking trip:

This article is about those putting their lives on the line to save that forest (about 25-30 miles away from my backpack route), and the fuckers disrupting these heroes' firefighting efforts in the Olympics & elsewhere:
Holy shit:

Stateline spoke to nearly a dozen firefighters, agency staffers and contractors, who said that top officials assigned to the fire deployed the crews to a remote location under false pretenses so federal agents could check their immigration status.
