This article traces the rapid rise of Amelia, a purple-haired, AI-generated character who circulates widely on social media.

In memes & videos, Amelia walks through London or the House of Commons, voicing nationalist & anti-Muslim rhetoric.

AI systems are trained on data that is socially informed not just cold "facts" (ie all of attitudes & stereotypes that support ongoing inequalities based on gender, race, sexuality etc) unsurprising AI chatbots are advising women & minorities to ask for less pay #nzpol

AI’s role in paying women less
It appears even AI chatbots are contributing towards the gender pay gap. A study last year found that the bots often advise women and other minorities to ask for significantly lower salaries than men....

Aotearoa academia, as we as a nation creep towards a more bicultural future that includes academic representation and partnership, I would expect people to have thoughts on this informed by the past 30 years of this nation. So I am sharing this.
The reason I asked this question is that colleagues I respect and trust in CL, for whom English is L2, apparently experience pressure not to cite papers written in their L1.

My actual opinions follow >>
Question for #AcademicSky about citational practice (please include your field in your answer):

Assuming you are writing in English, under what conditions do you cite work written in another language? Under what conditions do you avoid doing so?

First thought about the election date: November 7 is right when a lot of university students (mostly first time voters) will be finishing up and heading home for the summer. It’s really important to make sure your young people know what to do if they are out of their electorate on election day.

Today is the day that everyone should know or remember that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. began advocating for universal basic income before he was killed. Everyone should also know why. Read his words about it to learn why. Lots of quotes from him here to help understand his reasoning:

📣 Please use alt-text - for those of us who need screen readers and so on.

Also think of it alt-text writing as poetry. Yes it’s meant to be descriptive but it’s also another means of expression.
Since there’s an influx of new users, I think now would be a good time to remind everyone to add alt-text to your images.
