So was George W. Bush's America. As was Ronald Reagan's. There was only one year in the entire history of the US when it wasn't at war; hot or cold, overt or covert. That year was 1989-1990.

The use of 'republic' pays lip serve to 'No Kings' demographic, but is mainly used to signal to the far-right that CBS can be swayed to support the idea that US isn't a democracy. Thus, 'liberty, equality & rule of law' are empty signifiers applicable to any political dogma that might use them. 1/
Incredible. CBS Evening News announces five new “simple values” — instead of their “38-page handbook” — as they roll out Tony Dokoupil is lead anchor.

One of those values is simply: “We love America and make no apologies for saying so.”

It was the 14th anniversary of our life in Aotearoa NZ on New Year's Eve. We currently have my sister-in-law and her hubby visiting, and showing them around is a fantastic reminder of why we came here and why this is such a beautiful country.

Democracy is ensuring those who don't count are counted.

Queen Street, Auckland City Centre with Waihorotiu Stream in daylight again anyone?

Light Rail would be running down Hobson and Nelson Streets to connect to NW Metro, North Shore Line, and City Centre to Mangere Light Rail via Pitt Street

My first wish of 2026 is to not have conversations with AI boosters who start and end those conversations with "Oh, wow, yeah, isn't it amazing" without even once offering the faintest consideration of the socio-political and economic forces driving the tech. I'm done. Talk to someone else.

MTV should have died the moment David Bowie asked--on MTV--why it didn't play black music.

Bet this isn't 'different views' but young ppl wanting to avoid folk you want to kill the planet, destroy democracy, reassert white supremacy & erase minorities. Conversely if someone takes their pro-planet, pro-democracy, pro-diversity views as apocalyptic, why the fuck would you want to date them?

Everyone has a list of so-called "red flags" when they're dating. And for some, especially younger Americans, different political views is a relationship deal breaker.
Majority of Gen Z swipe left on dating people with opposite political views

The cargo ship, FITBURG, traveling from Russia to Israel, was boarded and seized by Finnish authorities after its anchor chain was found deployed in the water, dragging it from Estonia to Finland. The vessel is suspected of sabotaging the Elisa submarine telecommunications cable.

2025: The year we got used to it
A final long read for 2025, charting how we got used to cruelty, incompetence and farce – and how 2026 will need us all to be much noisier

If the UK did a Trump with the election of the moronic, self-serving racist Boris Johnson, what would be the US equivalent of Liz Truss? MTG?
