Pretty much all affordability discourse could benefit from just posting this chart.
If you're in the better off America, all the luxury goods you want in excess are for the most part much cheaper. If you're in the poorer America, most of the shit you need to live/grow is more expensive.

Tim Kaine is probably the most prominent elected official talking about the very real threat and struggle of long COVID and he just consigned millions to being screwed with ACA subsidies expiring.
Sen. Kaine on his vote for funding deal
“I got the first good night's sleep last night that I've gotten since Oct. 1, because I wasn't worried about being able to look Capitol Police in the eye when I walked in, or what a furloughed federal worker would say to me at church”

The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person.
The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person.
People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives.
And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.

Shutting down the government is a big deal. People have been hurt in big ways as a result of the decision. To have that suffering be for nothing—to re-open the government without actually having protected people’s health insurance and economic well-being—is unconscionable.

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?

If Schumer votes AGAINST this but enough Ds vote FOR it that it passes, he needs to RESIGN immediately.
He will have shown himself to be absolutely ineffective as a minority leader. He has to go.
Literally resign tonight.

Dems backed Trump into a corner where he’s advocating for starving Americans and hemorrhaging support. If they vote to let him off the hook in exchange for nothing it’s a cataclysmic failure. I know people are in pain but insulating Republicans from political consequences is not the answer.

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Look, if someone tells you "There's actually only one way (to solve poverty) and that's with the Optimus robot..." They are a crazy person and you should get away from them.
This passage puts Musk's arrogance and moral blinders on full display. At DOGE, Musk destroyed USAID and weakened other part of the compensatory state that have been shown to effectively address poverty. Yet here he babbling about robots and "wild sci-fi scenarios" as the "only way" to do so.
