I'd never seen the whole video before; it is truly a thing of beauty. Happy belated Exploding Whale Day to all who celebrate.
55 years ago today, the Oregon State Highway Division had a whale of a problem on its hands. How it solved it is the stuff of legends.

In other words: Happy Exploding Whale Day!
The Exploding Whale: An infamous moment in Oregon history creates a strangely beloved icon

Does anyone know what kinds of mushrooms these are? Are they poisonous?

Read The Eighteenth Emergency by Betsy Byars, after Andy Stanton recommended it in one of his videos. It’s a short children’s story that’s also suitable for tall children and adults of any height. A modern classic with a familiar theme and an unusual resolution and moral. Loved it!

Listened to this novella on my walk today. It was captivating in its own strange way, but I’m glad it was short. Didn’t want to be in the company of the protagonist for any longer than I was.

I've never done this on social media before but...

...my brilliant assistant is moving on to pastures new after three years. I am looking for someone to help me out. They need to be able to *get to North London easily, regularly*, energetic (it's often a dashing-around/carrying stuff job)...

This timeless middle grade story by Michael Morpurgo about friendship, bravery, love and hope is delightful, and beautifully illustrated by Benji Davies. It would make a most excellent bedtime story read over a few nights.

I enjoyed the unusual and thoughtful illustrated novel by Isobel Harrop. Perfect for teens navigating life, emotions and relationships.

When humans look at something we find beautiful our brains release dopamine, lifting mood & if we connect with what we're looking at oxytocin, giving us a sense of belonging.

Barker called me up one night and without preamble said "It's opinions, not onions. Not onions. This is Clive Barker. I've been trying to track down and stop this error in editions for decades. OPINIONS."
(It wasn't until Jeff and Ann VanderMeer were working on their anthology The Weird that I learned that "onions" is a typo. Either Jeff or Ann mentioned to me that Barker asked them to fix the typo that had haunted the story in countless reprintings, incl in their own earlier antho The New Weird.)

Here's the way many of us first read the ending of "In the Hills, the Cities". (This is from the paperback that I whined & cajoled my skeptical mother into letting me buy at the grocery store when I was a kid.)

Reading Human Rites by @junodawson.bsky.social at the moment and god I love this series. Contemporary fantasy done right, weaving the mundane and the supernatural together perfectly. I'd love recs for contemp fantasy that does this well (a la rivers of london too).
