🧵 During the pandemic we decided make five wide flowerbeds along the edges of our lawn. Our criteria was low $ and I wanted a lot of perennial color. I’d grown veggies for 15 years but my experience with flowers was buying assorted annuals and perennials in pots and crossing my fingers 🤞🌱

Yeah I mean the *2024 exit polls* found 56% support path to legal status for most undocumented versus only 40% deportations. Entire commentariat has pretended not to know this for the last year or so
Here's the thing: This was true in 2024. In the very same surveys where media shouted from rooftops that majorities supported "mass deportation" MORE people supported having people stay. But the latter didn't merit airtime. Chart credit: @mikepod.bsky.social

For more on how conditions at Dilley are affecting children, read my latest for @nbcnews.com
I interviewed a family of Russian asylum seekers who’ve been held more than four months at the Dilley detention center in Texas.

As we spoke over Zoom this week, their daughter Kamilla was one day shy of turning 12. I asked her what she wanted for her birthday.

She replied: “To get out of here.”

WOW. Incredible. This is the case in which DHS claimed that ICE officers had been attacked with a shovel and fired back in self-defense. Evidence since suggests an ICE officer fired through a closed door and struck someone on the other side.

Will DHS retract the prior claims?

In other words, the vast majority of the $45 billion in reconciliation funding is going to go to the new system of warehouse detention camps.

The other $6.8 billion will presumably serve mainly to keep the existing system of detention running without any other major changes.

DHS is shutting down because it refuses to obey the law. They are tear-gassing schools, killing American citizens, and disappearing legal immigrants. Democrats shouldn’t fund an out of control ICE.

Yep. This will have a huge impact on the availability of habeas for people who are still being arrested in Minnesota.
In other words, long enough that habeas petitions can be filed on their behalf in Minnesota before they're whisked off to an immigration detention facility somewhere in the Fifth Circuit (where, under that court's current law, they wouldn't be eligible for a bond hearing).
Incredibly powerful opinion chronicling the awfulness in Whipple and the ways it interfered with the right to counsel.

One key part of the ruling (that ICE will likely appeal ASAP); Judge Brasel bars ICE from transferring anyone out of Minnesota within 72 hours of arrest.

The DHS funding deadline is tomorrow — and a bill can’t pass without Democratic votes. We need Democrats to keep holding the line by refusing to fund DHS without ironclad limits on ICE and CBP, actual accountability for abuses, and clear guardrails to stop raids and intimidation. Let’s get to work.
