I got into OCs because I got tired of waiting for shows/games/anime to present me with characters I really liked. I wouldn't be able to make a fraction of the things I do if I wasn't running on PURE slightly-filtered self indulgence...
"How to make ACTUAL interesting OCs" "How to make OCs people will care about!" dog if you can't love your own creations that's where you need to start, don't make brand new beings for other's approval. You'll never truly love them if they're tied to a stranger's perception.

I understand there's always been media that ends up being hugely influential among creators in a given medium or genre in spite of having relatively little lasting public presence, but it's still a bit surreal to look at a crowd shot in a mainstream cartoon and think "is that fucking Dave Strider?"
