If you feel like your Electricity bill is out of control – it is. Prices are up 11.5% this year alone. Prices are up 21% from 2023, with the majority of the increase happening since June 2024. Don’t worry though – the government is planning on adding to your bill with a new tax!

The second #kakapo chick of the #kakapo2026 breeding season hatched this morning: Hine Taumai-A1-2026 on Ako's nest on Te Kākahu. We transferred the egg from Anchor two nights ago. This is Ako's first-ever chick, which is just a few hours old in this video. #conservation #birds #parrots

Poop is in the air, everywhere we look around
Poop is in the air, every night and every land
And I don't know if I'm being foolish
Don't know if I'm being woke
But is something that National believes in
And it's there when poop gets in your eyes
We cancelled 3 waters and not only is there poop in the marine reserve it’s in the bloody air.

new business idea: university where staff get AI to write lectures which students summarise with AI into essays which are marked by AI; except the savings come by just pretending we did all that and then giving out degrees for money.

One of the consistent patterns of this era is that the attempt by the Right to overthrow democracy has run into mass people’s opposition and also judicial opposition. This thing is far from over but the political right is facing more opposition than they anticipated.

NZ has normalised inequality. As the cost of living rises, Govt has to expand into every corner of life so people don't starve and end up homeless.
We need to reduce inequality and rampant rentierism so that people and communities have the resources they need to look after themselves.

We will spend the next 10 years trying to retrain new people because of the numbers of experienced people that have left the country.
Its not just a brain drain.
Re-training costs billions.
Its a finanical disaster.

Nearly 120,000 Kiwis leave as population growth from immigrants to NZ slows
The difference between the number of people moving to NZ and those leaving for overseas 2025 was the lowest for a year since 2013 (excluding the 2021 pandemic).

I'm glad that at least for now NZ corporates still are not afraid of pride colours. But we need to remember that nothing is given, particularly in this climate.

Having spent most of my working life in transport policy, this is the essential truth that so many people - including politicians with responsibility for transport decisions - don’t or won’t get.

To reduce congestion, you reduce capacity and reduce speed. The empirical evidence is overwhelming.
If you widen that highway

you won’t reduce emissions

or congestion.

What you WILL do

is spend a lot of public money

to induce even more cars

emitting even more GHGs and pollution

in the same or worse congestion

with people still demanding that you widen the highway.

Period.

Not 'struggling'.

Not 'hard up'.

Not 'skipping meals'.

*Starving*

In Aotearoa. In 2026.

This is so immoral and disgusting that opposition parties should be 20 points ahead in the polls by now.

It's nice to know that having an excel job was also a viable career path 4000 years ago
The spreadsheet on this clay tablet, which is almost 4,000 years old, is organised into columns for furrowed area, grain produced, land not sown, and the field’s name.

The first field is called “Of the soldiers who stood in for their fathers”.

It’s ancient Excel, but I find that incredibly moving
