If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

Unlike most apps these days, Scrivener does not use AI in any way. However, if you’re on a Mac, you may see an AI prompt.

when I was young, i used to wonder how people like this would fare in life, as they didn't seem suited for gainful employment. it turns out, the internet allowed them to accumulate a massive audience of similar idiots, enriching them and turning them into a presidential advisor

This current trend of adding "It reflects our vision" to AI disclosures makes me sick

"no it's fine that we used the theft machine because it was our creative vision!" get fucked, every single one of you

"What if one of YOUR favorite politicians/celebrities/etc is on the list?" Did you all not notice how quickly we dropped Neil Gaiman when we found out about the things he did? Do you know how beloved that guy used to be and how loathed he is now? I think that right there should answer your question.

I thought the idea of a sex abuse ring at the highest levels of government was overheated and ridiculous.

I thought Captain America: The Winter Soldier having secret Nazi senators was over the top.

My life has become a single ongoing revelation that I have not been cynical enough

I just checked the copy of Windows 98 that I have handy (who doesn't), and the notepad.exe in there is 53,248 bytes. Also it runs perfectly fine on Windows 11. I make no further comment on these facts.
I started up Notepad on my Windows laptop yesterday and it told me that it now has AI. Notepad. The simple little "look at a batch file and edit it" program that should be 200k long. Now with AI. The world has gone crazy.

“individual employees asked to change behavior in response to catastrophic mistakes made by their high-level leadership over the past 3-7 years” really feels like the overarching story of the current times
"Store employees are now required to smile if they are within 10 feet of a shopper.

They also must make eye contact with and wave to or greet the customer.

If they’re within four feet, the employee should ask how the customer’s day is going or if they need help."

🙄 Won't stop the boycott, y'all.
Target is now requiring its employees to smile more
As the holiday season fast approaches, Target is urging its employees to add a little more “jolly” to their work routine.

Wow. I knew he stole credit for Rosalind Franklin’s discovery of the nature of DNA but I had no idea he was such an incredible piece of shit aside from that. Shouldn’t be surprised.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!
