لم أتمني البكاء يومًا، ولكن هم الزمان ابكاني، تمنيت أن أعيش كما تريد نفسي، لكن نفسي عاشت كما يريد زماني. (مصطفى محمود)

I never wished to cry, but the time made me cry, I wished to live as I wanted myself, but myself lived as my time wanted. (Mustafa Mahmoud)
I know that the scene where Ka‘iana is freeing all the slaves in Chief of War is probably historically inaccurate, considering Late-Neolithic chiefs' attitude to the slave class, but damn watching those slaves ingeniously using oil lamps and any random objects against their captors felt satisfying.

Yet Iceland, despite being a smaller country can do this: "They have more patients and about half the staff of the NGS, yet in two years they eliminated their 700 person waiting list. They usually only need 30-45 minutes of assessment, and in their intensive weeks they’d start 30 people on HRT"

in 2023 when I was organizing parents against our archbishop’s transphobic new school guidelines, one dad asked how loud I thought it was prudent for us to be, given how punitive the Archbishop is. I was like “loud enough that all the trans/nb kids at your parish see it” and he was like “…. oh”
Every time you speak up - and every time you don't - there are people watching and learning about you and the world you help create.
The drunk uncle theory.

You don’t argue with the casually homophobic uncle at Thanksgiving dinner to change his mind; you argue so that the closeted cousin at the kids table knows there’s safe people and better possibilities out there

It turned out that the late Zhou elites lied about how humane the early Zhou kings were. What's unconsciously worried me since then if this fact entails that the whole Zhou humanism ideology has always been an executable misconception specifically because it was based on false premises.

My little children cry from hunger and cold at night ❄️💔
My heart is breaking, and I am powerless to protect them… We urgently need £300 for food and blankets to survive 🙏

It's still depressing that so many so called leftists are throwing the term "zio" around without a care in a world despite being repeatly told that the term was coined by David Duke and is antisemitic.

A lot of the younger political detrans people use this narrative that "it would've been different if I was born 10 years earlier" but friends, I was born 20 years earlier, and I'm still fucking trans. I had to grow up and find out who I was by listening to other trans people.

The gestapo (theoretically) leaving with their tails tucked between their legs is NOT the same as returning our neighbors, fixing our communities, paying serious reparations, and making sure those fuckers face justice for their crimes. But, boy does this feel (cautiously optimistically) good

I can confirm this is true and I can also say that the lack of an eviction moratorium is fueling this trend.

I read the LotR soon after finishing a historical novel about the 109 BC Saumacus rebellion, that celebrated how the slaves overthrew the king and the top slaveowners, so when Tolkien's novel ended with proclaiming Aragorn a king, ngl it felt really disappointing to me.

The scheme to replace underpaid gig drivers in America with even more severely underpaid gig drivers in even poorer countries is bad.

Americans should drive themselves or pay someone a living wage.

Disabled Americans should have access to taxpayer funded services that pay drivers a living wage.

They conscripted Cavetown into the rhodesian security forces, and now he looks even more depressed. 😢
Was this very mid-2000s emo person press-ganged into ICE servitude?

Without a major investment in publicly funded media or VERY well-funded worker-run collectives, we are all on a sinking ship. The problem is convincing the public that they're going down, too.
A lot of people cannot just start a paid newsletter or become freelancers to sustain their careers. The sports, metro, and international desks did work that requires *team* resources, like legal checks, documents, access to archives, and long-term beat experience.

I'm rereading Le Guin's "Planet of Exile" and Askatevar reminded me of the description of Gallic fortresses in the Commentaries. Last time I read this novel back when I was 12, in translation into my native language. This time everything looks both so familiar and so different in the new context.

The Veneti tribe's ships were one of the most interesting things mentioned in Caesar's Commentaries. They resembled European ships from later historical epochs, and they were so much better than Romans' ships, that the Romans needed to come up with completely new techniques to defeat the Veneti.

Dzreinu-Earthian names for planets in their astronomical catalogue are formed from:
(1) a name of one of the 12 Old Yiltangian zodiac signs, such as Dzwem (Axe), Tkwem (Ploughman), Maai (Whale) etc., that denotes a galactic sector
(2) a 7-digit hexadecimal code, such as 701AE09. #DzreinuEarth

There's another small victory against bigotry and transphobia today. Plus, the public opinion seems to be pro-trans:

"Six options were considered for the Kenwood Ladies, Highgate Men's and Hampstead mixed ponds, with 86% of respondents supporting the existing trans-inclusive access arrangements."
