It is a surpassing irony that Britain chose to quit Europe and put its chips on global trade deals at precisely the moment globalisation was going into reverse. The UK's economic stagnation and strategic loneliness has made it needier than ever towards Washington. As Carney pointed out, and the record shows, America has weaponised integration as a tool of enforcing obedience. Dealing bilaterally with the US entails being crushed. Negotiating collectively, on the other hand, would restore clout and correct that costly imbalance. After wracking my brains, I have come up with a slogan for Britain's middle power opportunity: "Take back control."

(Sadly for our theme it doesn't seem to have worn Western Approaches camouflage - which was designed by Peter Scott, the post-war founder of the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust)

A full moon peers through a bank of cloud to illuminate two figures rising from a turbulent sea: a long-necked plesiosaur and the spiralling tail and body of a mosasaur (fun historofact: fossils of mosasaurs were among the first Mesozoic reptiles to be put on record, but they weren't restored in palaeoart until the 1850s, decades after other marine reptiles). They threaten and bellow at each other with whipping tongues and clawed flippers because John Martin. A rocky arch can be seen on the right, and a third reptile, its identity uncertain, arches from the water on the left. Go draw some Martineseque Mesozoic animals, folks, it's hellafun.

The US has loads of military installations in Europe. It likes to pretend this is for Europe’s protection, but this is only partly true. Ramstein, as mentioned here by the Greens’FP expert is a good example. If the US decides to attack Greenland, throwing out US mil installations should be discussed
