It’s interesting how the risk awareness that dependence on US systems - be it in digital services, defence, or payment methods - has been internalised fairly quickly in Europe.

National Bank of Sweden chief says Sweden is too dependent on MasterCard and Visa and needs non-American alternatives

People got really mad at me when I called Victor out a few years ago for misrepresenting climate science in his testimony against the youth plaintiffs in the Juliana lawsuit against the US govt for supporting fossil fuels.

Not discussing climate impacts at all is also a form of misrepresentation.

What's realistic about keeping coal-generation power plants operating when they are trying to shut them down for economic reasons?

Nothing in this David Victor essay indicates that there’s any danger in heating the planet over 2C. Instead, he says that slowing decarbonization is good. 🤔

Spent 6 months in detention waiting on a decision on his asylum application until he was deported to CECOT

The detail that they sent out an asylum seeker who presented himself to immigration correctly also seems new. Again, did we know this? Seems like a weird thing for a terrorist to do

This has been made available, so for purposes of commenting on Bari Weiss's decision to spike the story, here's a live-post of that segment.

It begins with a "you may recall" summary of the deportation to el Salvador. Describes the admin's claim that it could deport the men without due process

trump is kind of sui generis and after a decade of his increasingly demented psychosis i can sort of let him wash over me. but seeing a soft, empty 40 year old man who absolutely knows better do or say anything he has to say to get power - including shit on his own kids - is genuinely revolting

Denmark lost more troops per capita in the post 9/11 war on Afghanistan. Saying they “are not a good ally” because they won’t surrender their territories to the US is lunacy. We are betraying our allies to satisfy the whims of a would-be Emperor for whom the US is not enough.
They’re again advocating against Denmark when it comes to Greenland

The median ICE officer carries both a long and short gun.

It's quite possible that this is true but I think the pertinent issue which overrides these calculations in a more normal conflict is that Russia, like Israel, has more totalizing and irrational ambitions which involve the liquidation of an entire people and culture. The UK did too, but gave it up.
Ukraine is facing the same choice as Ireland in the 1920s and India in the 1940s. Sovereignty will come at a territorial price. It could de facto concede some, but not do so de jure, then use proxies in occupied to territory to continuously destabilize Russia. Russia's gift horse may become Trojan.
