Moreover, state and local leaders, who have worked hard to attract press and political attention to the abuses happening in Minnesota, understand that it is almost uniformly beneficial to have press interacting with observers - doing ridealongs, talking to us. Paranoia around press is harmful.

I see this everyday on my papers’ FB pages. That and a fundamental misunderstanding of criminal and civil violations.
Does anyone have a count of how many people were “doing it right” only to have the rules changed?

I genuinely have no idea how to convey this to the American people, but I think the biggest impediment to any kind of immigration reform is that people are convinced that "legal" and "illegal" are immutable, intrinsic categories instead of a rapidly-shifting arbitrary constellation of regulations.
