Public Schools, Averting Ecological Collapse, Unions. We can build it. 🦑

🌲 Oregon 🌲
Affordable for *who*? We need to increase affordability for working families with things exactly like universal preschool, and the tax on top earners that pays for it (approved by voters!).

This is so alienating for potential voters, who wrote this???
Cutting property taxes for Oregonians affected by wildfires. Canceling planned freeway tolls. Pausing local new taxes in the Portland area. We have to keep going to make life more affordable for Oregonians.

6,000 faculty members at Penn State has filed for a union.

These professors and other faculty will vote on unionizing in the coming year.

If they win their union it will be the largest public union in Pennsylvania.

To write a lengthy article about a (hugely overstated) "teacher absentee crisis" and not talk to a single teacher currently working in Oregon schools is quite unfortunate. The framing here encourages people to pick sides instead of working together to solve any potential problem that might exist.
In and around Portland, teachers are missing more school than ever. Their bosses don't want to talk about it
It's not just students. Post-pandemic, teachers are also missing significantly more school days. Oregon has virtually no policies in place to counteract the trend.

Trump's executive order tonight has illegally cancelled union contracts for 67% of the federal workforce & 75% of unionized federal employees — roughly 700,000 union workers

This may be the single biggest attack on the labor movement in American history

but nobody can communicate this cause and effect honestly to workers, it's all couched in ambiguities

The key thing is that this is true whether you believe they deserved or earned that wealth or not. That whole debate is irrelevant. Even if it were possible to legitimately earn $500 billion, we couldn't abide one person having that much power to dominate others normatively or practically.
One insight from republican theory, which I write about in my book, is that the wealthy are dangerous for what they could be doing, even if they seem harmless or benevolent now. Sure, they're giving to starving orphans or whatever in the moment. But the power they wield can't be abided. Ex: Elon.
