I'd like to think that Lt. Columbo would prevail but I think that his constant references to his wife would create the suspicion that she was also in there with him, leading to wrongful banishment.

My memory of the story was we stayed more, perhaps always, with the mother and the world building. I barely recall the son at all.
Also, you’re more right about the sound FX than you know. Hodgkin was raiding the DW cupboard a lot for this, and also making sounds he’d use later there.
