🧵There's a pernicious myth that Republicans have more money than Democrats. In fact, Democrats have raised more—including so-called "dark money."

Republicans have less money but understand politics better. This is why they win.

This is actually a little galaxy dressed up as a ghost, with its arms outstretched, unsuccessfully trying to scare all the bigger galaxies around it.
An irregular galaxy, observed with the Hubble Space Telescope in the COSMOS survey.

It is at redshift 0.81 (lookback time 7.09 billion years) with coordinates (150.42292, 2.58324).

53 volunteers classified this galaxy in Galaxy Zoo: Hubble.

Sunday reading:

I wrote about the aggrieved extremist who is currently firing thousands of federal workers and ravaging state capacity based on conspiratorial nonsense - and about mainstream media’s infuriating tendency to sanitize Russell Vought and the regime he serves.

This week’s piece:
We need to talk about Russell Vought – But Properly
Why certain mainstream outlets insist on sanitizing Vought as a devout “small government” conservative – and what actually animates his war against pluralistic democracy

What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.

As a theoretical cosmologist, I'm frequently asked "what is the benefit of the work you're doing for people's lives?" Nothing I work on makes money or cures disease.

There are a few different answers one can give, at various levels of "convincing" / "actually relevant to why the work is done."

The Plague by Camus came in handy when trying to help the 12yo through an unexpected existential mini-crisis. Anyway reading is good and ya never know how that book you read 20 years ago might be applied to parenting. #booksky
