Every time I watch an Olympic an event I try to predict whether I would merely come in last place or whether I would be disqualified for injury within seconds of starting.
I love the Olympic athletes who come in last. "Worst of the best" is such an interesting position psychologically

Also, if I can get a bit spicy here, I think that a lot of people’s panic about AI replacing them is based on their sublimated belief that their job is bullshit. It’s an imposter syndrome thing in a lot of ways.

2026 will be a "fire horse" year. According to Wikipedia, 'a woman born in the year of the fire horse has a strong temperament and shortens her husband's life'. Birth certificates were sometimes altered to avoid the unlucky year, giving the illusion of large drops

It's frankly mind-boggling that we've only had 11 murders in Philadelphia so far this year. At this point last year—the year with the lowest murder rate in 60 years—there were 21 murders. In 2021 we'd already had 52! The mayor, the tourism bureaus, everyone should be talking about this non-stop.

What do Paris, Montreal, Barcelona and Brussels have in common?

"now, as before, our leaders don’t actually want America to Americanize. They want us to believe this country can’t survive taking in people who will both change and be changed by it. And they still fail to see the wisdom in Wise’s vision of a country that becomes more itself with every immigrant"

Jeff Bezos' wedding last summer cost somewhere around $50M. That, alone, could have saved all 300 positions cut today at The Washington Post for a year.

Of course, he wouldn't have to choose. He could do both because he's worth $250B, which is nearly the GDP of New Zealand.
