Some thoughts on one of the best friends I ever had.

Just went to our homepage and felt this overwhelming sadness that Dan was the subject of our lead story instead of the one writing it. Truly one of one, the best to ever do it.

I've spent the past month in awe of Minneapolis residents' courage, so I interviewed a few of them about how we might recreate that here in Philadelphia.
What Philadelphia Can Learn From Minneapolis’s ICE Resistance
“The main thing here is that we are just relentless in supporting our neighbors,” one Minneapolis resident said. “That's it. We don’t care where they came from originally.”

Imagine one person teaching a whole city the size of Philadelphia how much joy, love, and strength we could find in laughing at ourselves together. That’s what I will miss the most. Rest in peace, Dan.

“Without Dan’s voice, Philly Mag wouldn’t be Philly Mag. And, I’d argue, Philadelphia wouldn’t quite be Philadelphia.”

Dan’s editor here, Brian Howard, on what our friend meant to this magazine and, more importantly, this city.

We've revived the long-gone video that McQuade took of Hannibal Buress back in 2014, the video that literally changed history.
Hannibal Buress on Bill Cosby: 'You're a Rapist'
Comedian Hannibal Buress called Bill Cosby a rapist in a bit at the Trocadero on Thursday night. Cosby has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women.

Dan had the only truly necessary trait for a writer and that's curiosity.
Dan’s eagerness to explore an idea that seemed only a quirky thought to some was so cool. I remember mentioning an idea i had, he hopped in my DMs and said he wanted to explore the idea further, and asked if I had a problem with it. I dont remember the topic or what came of it. but no man, go for it

the kinship i felt w mcquade the moment this happened, that *thing* indescribable but tasting or smelling something newsworthy is happening or about to happen and you should hit record, damn to discover that somebody else had that too, out there

i hope you get to experience that yourself someday

shout out to Dan McQuade, who took me up on an offer to see Hannibal Buress at the Troc, pulled out his phone to record the Bill Cosby joke, and through the butterfly effect of the internet sent Bill Cosby to prison and kickstarted the #MeToo movement. He was one of the kindest guys I’ve ever met.

A couple of us at the magazine were just talking about this. Dan wrote funny blogs, yes, but he also literally changed the course of conversation for an American icon.
As @jenniferkates.bsky.social reminds me, it was Dan McQuade who was at Hannibal Burress's October 2014 show at the Troc when he said “You rape women, Bill Cosby,” happened to be recording it, made it go viral, and from then on no one ever could forget or deny who Bill Cosby was.

Maybe this is maudlin but I feel like we need some type of Oscars montage for the posters we lost this year. Guys like Dan McQuade, Mike Fossey and Kaleb Horton contributed so much to online culture, but everything about it is so impermanent. People need to know who they were.

This is the Philadelphia App and Dan *was* Philadelphia. Nobody else captured the weirdness (solemn to silly) of this region and its culture with such affection and respect. Everyone wear your stupidest Wildwood boardwalk tee in his honor. Be good, buddy.

Devastated to be seeing the news about Dan McQuade's passing. He was a great writer and great person, the best and most Philly person I've ever known. I was lucky to have read his work and to have been able to call him a friend. Love you @dhm.bsky.social, what a void you'll leave behind.

Dan McQuade was the lifeblood of Philly writers, a mensch whose gift for writing was only surpassed by his love of his country, Philadelphia. The city will never be the same without him.
