they're executing moms and nurses in the street. they're using preschoolers as bait. they're stealing people's dads and grandmas and children. they're tear gassing babies. they're staking out schools. there is no remedy but abolition. any proposal that doesn't start there is an act of violence.

Imagine how much they’d be lying about what happened without all the videos showing it from multiple angles.

The Trump-Vance administration just used your taxes to pay for ICE agents to kill a 37-year-old nurse, who was only there because another ICE agent killed a 37-year-old mother of three, who was only there because ICE agents are kidnapping your neighbors

Alex from our time working together, while he was in nursing school. Later, he moved to ICU, working as a nurse to support critically ill Veterans. He had such a great attitude. We’d chat between patients about trying to get in a mountain bike ride together. Will never happen now

I watched the video of today’s ICE execution - a terrible idea, don’t do it - and I find this level of state evil in America incomprehensible

I’m so sorry for my US friends who are seeing this happen to their county

The American govt is a rogue terrorist faction; the world must sanction it.

Fascists like climate change, because the chaos it causes will allow populist politics to go down easy, with mass starvation and refugee catastrophes.

It is our duty to work against them. Join the most effective political group you can.
The UK gov has finally released the Global biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and national security report. We face catastrophe. Why aren't politicians acting? I think some are - but in ways perhaps just as frightening.
My latest for Technosphere Earth.

No war on a dead planet
If defence and intelligence agencies understand the risks from climate and biodiversity collapse, why can’t politicians?

Will never tire of the culture shock for visiting Americans encountering the unsmiling bartender.

There's a little girl behind me in the waiting room, listing her favourite venomous snakes off in order, to her mum. As adults, we don't list off our favourite venomous snakes often enough, and evidently we should, because she's having a great time.

I am leisurely making my way through Ursula Le Guin’s “Always Coming Home” and I came across a poem I just have to share.

The ending especially slaps.

The murder of Renee Good just confirms what anyone with a lick of sense has known for years - ICE is the American Gestapo. Protected identities, zero accountability, and unchecked power.

If the officer responsible isn't charged with murder by the state then I don't know where that leaves the US.

Let's talk about generative AI, contaminated information, and rhubarb.

Once upon a time, Europe was at war.

Food was scarce, and the government of the quote-unquote United Kingdom looked for alternatives. 1/

Can highly recommend Broken Veil. Six-part pod that has some supremely chilling moments, and gets in deep into what scares us.

A phone is the cigarette for the eyes. In a few swipes you can see: book recommendation list - tradwife baking - war crimes - a cat - hierarchical polycule which is somehow just as misogynistic as the tradwife thing - a meme that needs you to watch a seven hour video to understand - AI slop - a cat.

Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing a text, writing an email, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing since the dawn of time.

In the latest Predator film, they have a shot inside the Predator's ship with a mounted T. rex skull. Which leaves us with at least three options:

A) The Predators have had space faring technology for a *minimum* of 65 million years and all they've done with it is be big game hunters.

Had a bloody fang-tastic (sorry) time with The Feeding by @anthonyryan.bsky.social. Characters as ruthless as the world they occupy, yet human enough to go to extraordinary lengths for one another, and still treasure the arts that we do. And the feeders are a savage twist on a classic which I loved!

Had a cracking time with Elder Race by @aptshadow.bsky.social. The coalesce of both bits of SFF is always my jam, and this one has a lovely, warm sense of adventure about it. Tackles depression in a kind and hopeful way, and left me feeling optimistic.

Watched 'The Assessment' tonight, a 2024 sci-fi about parents being tested to see if the state thinks they should be allowed children. Bound to touch a few nerves regarding a bunch of current issues. Pulls at the seams of society. An important film, well worth your time.

Holy crap!! Written in Stars by @aptshadow.bsky.social was one of my favorite shorts in last year’s Advent Subscription- just such a gem! And now we’re getting a full novel?

An absolute out-of-left-field gem of great news.
