I finally made another episode! This time I look at the psychology replication crisis and stories about self-fulfilling prophecies. Anyone who is familiar with the show will not be surprised to hear that there is more nuance there than some may expect 🙂 rss.com/podcasts/our...

I've found this to be true when it comes to explaining why I still mask in public. Once nearly everybody had already had COVID once vaccines were out, "I don't want to die" garnered skepticism but "My favorite foods tasted wrong for six months last time" had folks going "oh, huh, that makes sense!"
Same reason people go on motorcycles without helmets: your argument about deaths means nothing to them.

Tell em the most likely outcome is not death, but 60 years of pain and not being able to wipe their own ass, though, and suddenly they think a helmet is a good idea.

I don't think OpenAI robbed me of "generational wealth."

I think it is bad that a billionaire stole from hundreds of thousands of people in order to make himself richer.

I didn't think that needed to be explained.
Can I just pay all of you the $0.99 it would cost to buy your entire catalogue at a used bookstore, so you stop feeling like you missed out on generational wealth here

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the hideous ubiquity of AI slop I strongly recommend looking at breathtaking art that predates the written word and crying at the enduring beauty of human creativity for a bit.

Plagues, wars and ice ages haven't stopped us, neither will robots who suck at painting.

Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

I didn’t know this but it doesn’t surprise me. The stereotypes are just another example of a nasty story to demonise an underprivileged group
With SNAP on the verge of running out of money, a critical reminder that people who rely on food stamps make far healthier grocery choices than most of us do.

Loved these episodes! Although Sophie and @margaret.bsky.social were a big unfair to the oral tradition! It’s not ‘just a game of telephone’ there are specific ways to memorise and check information. I actually wonder if part of why druids were against writing was they feared losing control of info?

Here’s where it gets personal for me. When I was 9, I started experiencing suicidal ideation … disinterested in living, and at least some of the time contemplating death and how it might happen … It’s easy to imagine how I would have used programs like these chatbots.
Perry: How can AI be used ethically when it’s been linked to suicide?
"It’s not on us, on you and me, to use AI ethically or responsibly. It’s on the companies to build safe, reliable, ethical products," David M. Perry writes.

Then says Norway only got £2.7bn.

But it’s 1/12th the population of the UK!

Scaled up that would be £32bn. That’s serious money.

I know pointing out hypocrisy doesn't really do anything, but I remember that Top Gear had a running gag where Jeremy would mock his co-host Richard Hammond for having his teeth whitened.
Is he for or against aesthetic dental work?
I've got lots of things to say about Jeremy Clarkson.

Really not worth it. He knows his game is over and so is resorting to personal attacks.

Cities develop unique cultures and this is an important part of the story of protests in Portland at the moment
What The Hell Is Going On, a thread:

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

So I’m gonna give you my breakdown.
