really awesome episode
Tech companies have plenty of bad ideas they say will improve transportation — but the car remains a menace.

@brooklynspoke.bsky.social and @sgoodyear.bsky.social join @parismarx.com to discuss the many ways cars harm society and why that must change.

As a neuroscientist, I’d suggest there is a profound disconnect between what *some* computer scientists think is representative of “intelligence”, cognitive ability, or descriptions of consciousness from some in AI work.

LLMs are not how neural systems process information, nor how brains function.

A billion dollars is the socio-political equivalent of a loose nuke, and we should work as ruthlessly and diligently to prevent the acquisition of the former as we do the latter.
“The problem with billionaires isn’t that they’re hoarding money that would otherwise pay for a Scandinavian social utopia. It’s that their money has become a source of wildly distorted political power that allows a few men with extremist views to wreak havoc on the rest of us.”

This is the point I am constantly repeating, and that AI booster seek to obscure; every single “ability” demonstrated by an LLM is there because humans already put enough examples of it online.
In all the endless discussions of LLMs, there’s a point that is, on one level, obvious, but that I feel does not get sufficiently foregrounded: LLMs are transforming material that people have put up on the internet.
