I am epic win.

Украине – мир, России – свободу
The thing about building your entire ethos around impunity - literally, the impunity is the point of the whole thing - is that you've no ability to enforce discipline for anything other than disloyalty. Everything from fuckups to outright insanity must be not just tolerated, but forcefully supported

My neighbor told me he keeps losing falcons to the widening gyre so I asked how many falcons he has and he said he just goes to the falconry and gets a new falcon afterwards so I said it sounds like he’s just feeding falcons to drown with the ceremony of innocence and then Yeats started crying.

Not weird at all, unfortunately. While you may not be able to terminate existing grants, etc. in ways that violate law, regulation, or policy, the Feds are under no obligation to give any institution *new* grants - and it's basically impossible to prove that the reason was anti-DEI or anything else.
This must be weird news to see if you’re one of the literally hundreds or even thousands of university administrators who preemptively censored faculty, scrubbed websites, changed the names of centers, etc.
Trump administration drops legal appeal over anti-DEI funding threat to schools and colleges. This leaves in place a federal judge's ruling that the anti-DEI effort violated the First Amendment and federal procedural rules. (Via AP) apnews.com/article/dei-... #ncpol #nced

Faine highlighting a real quandary for those left of center (or legitimately libertarian) here: border restrictions are an immensely powerful & useful tool of public and foreign policy. This is, ah, in tension with the de rigueur belief in open borders, 'freedom of movement is a human right,' etc.
This is 100% correct and the EU should do it immediately.

The USA will break if a bunch of entitled Americans suddenly can’t book get-aways in Paris.
90 day suspension of US tourist visas and this is all over

I realise I'm just a freak, but living in a multicultural city is the best thing of all time, it's just the best possible human experience and i can not understand why anyone on earth would be like "weve got to destroy this"

Unfortunately, the notion that 'Of course more density brings more crime, what else would you expect?' explains like 50% of NIMBYism and makes it appear entirely rational, if self-interested.
Kemi, this is just a population density map

The impunity is, indeed, the point. Even moreso than cruelty, it is the animating urge of MAGA: the desire to be wantonly, flagrantly, theatrically impervious to accountability

This is self-evidently correct, and Jamelle is right to say it out loud. But it is unsatisfying on its own in terms of pointing to corrective, because the Weak Parties, Strong Partisanship hypothesis shows us that the GOP is less a coherent organization than a *brand* serving as a vehicle for a...
yep. i can identify any number of structural issues but at the end of the day the basic problem is the republican party. this has been apparent for at least 20 years. it is also an incredibly unpopular observation to make among “serious” people.
Right.

If you want a good explanation of why the American system of government worked well enough for 200 years and then suddenly stopped, it's because Republicans in Congress suddenly started letting their partisan interests COMPLETELY override their institutional interests

The fact that "and political leadership" is relegated to a parenthetical is sorta the problem here. The level of strategic thinking among the brass varies far more than it should, but their domain of expertise is the *military* instrument of national power, even if they learn about others in school
this is basically ricks' argument in THE GENERALS: that the structure of the american military (and political leadership) has generated an enormously competent professional force... that consistently generates useless results because of a void of strategic thinking at the top

Pretty much the entirety of military training & education is focused on jus in bello, not jus ad bellum. Which makes sense, because even jus in bello can be a lot more complicated than people think (then again, a lot of people on here think the definition of war crime is "any violence I don't like")
But they don’t know what orders are illegal and which aren’t. If everything flows from that fact, everything falls apart.

Bad takes are the mind-killer. Bad takes are the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my bad takes. I will permit them to pass over me & through me. And when they have gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see their path. Where the bad takes have gone there will be nothing.
I do not wish to get in fights on the internet today but there are some takes floating around that are Not Good

U.S. foreign policy exists in a superposition of all possible rationales. A definitive rationale is only established when a measurement, such as a Congressional reporting requirement or a lawsuit, takes place and collapses the foreign policy wave function.
