How much more in your face can it be?

"Why are you asking me for my paperwork?"
"Because of your accent."
"You have an accent too."
"Where were you born sir?"
"Where were you born at?"
"Put your hands behind your back."

"'democrat' politicians"
respectfully, hank, i think the inaction and non-urgency of leading democrat politicians in response to ICE's attack on minneapolis street protesters this week makes the differences more frustratingly stark than ever.

Because of Russia, Ukraine is cold and dark, and not just for humans.

I can only imagine what it would feel like to lose the pups as I ran to a shelter or they bolted when a drone hit my home.

Nobody wants to admit to caring about the climate anymore, and yet clean tech financing is booming, making a mint for investors. Trump is betting the future on a shrinking pot. The smart money is going green.

The Smart Money Is Turning Out to Be Green Money
Climate and money are too often divorced in our imaginations, the assumption being that you can’t make money or properly run an economy and keep the climate from imploding at the same time. People who...

I've watched thousands of videos from the Jan. 6 riot as part of NPR's reporting and archive project on that day.

Here are some of the lesser known videos that have really stuck with me.

A lot of people don't know this about DC, but we actually have some decent skiing/riding. Snow isn't too bad this year either.

Fun fact: @johncena has followed the DC Council on Twitter since 2022

(We know, he follows a million accounts, but still applaud his interest in municipal governance)

Man, I wish a lot of erstwhile climate advocates would channel their enthusiasm into more productive outlets.

Hyperscalers attempting decarbonization is good. Verifiable EACs are good. Hyperscalers buying EACs is good.

CDR tech is capex heavy. This is another financing mechanism.

Split here. Ultimately, I support the Bonds effort. But the Council trying to undo or water down past initiatives is un-democratic.

The professional activists increasingly pushing this stuff need to find a real job or better hobbies. The stadium thing was predictable and screamed: not from here
A two-year rent freeze. A ban on foie gras and Daylight Saving Time. A $25 minimum wage – and no more tipped wage.

These are all things D.C. could be voting on next year. Are D.C.'s ballot initiatives people-powered democracy, or have they gone too far?

D.C. ballot initiatives target rent freeze and minimum wage
For some it’s people-powered democracy. For others, it’s just too much.

Interesting story combining all my favorite things.

California has low-carbon building material standards, meaning that you need to find ways to reduce the carbon intensity of your concrete. The easiest way to do that is by replacing cement with SCMs (supplementary cementitious materials).

My first time visiting limestone quarries. Combined reserves of hundreds of millions of tons of limestone. Not all of it will be calcined, but for every two tons burned to make a ton of cement, a ton of CO2 will be released.

Domestic cement consumption is ~130 m tons, releasing ~260 m tons of CO2.

First pie since I lost my dad. I'm an excruciatingly mid baker, compounded further by not having practiced in 10 months. But he always used to quietly get 2nd and 3rd servings and I could never tell if he was trying to encourage his son or if he genuinely liked it.

Probably the former. I miss him.
