DC Council

We’re the District’s legislature and a coequal branch of DC government. On social media, our goal is to engage in an informative and conversational way.
On this date in 1867, by overriding a Presidential veto, Congress granted African American males in the District the right to vote in local elections. Just 7 years later, they took this right to vote back from African American males...& everyone in the District. For a century.

Happy Birthday to deep-voiced local legend Kojo Nnamdi!
We presented him with a ceremonial resolution in 2019 that lays out his extensive work in our community. Check it out at lims.dccouncil.gov/downloads/LI...

We’re not a state, but we are a plate…

(If we take back Arlington, we could just use any square baking dish as our state plate)

Thirty years ago today: the Blizzard of 1996

A blizzard extending an otherwise settled government shutdown is peak federal Washington…

5 years ago today—When our national democracy was threatened, the District of Columbia stepped in and stood strong. Our National Guard and police helped prevent the unthinkable. All this despite us being bereft of representation in the very Congress we came to defend.

To reflect the resignation of Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie earlier today, we have updated our “Brady Bunch” social media profile image to reflect the current composition of the Council

On this date in 1911, Charlotte Ray died. She was the 1st female Black lawyer in the US, the 1st woman admitted to the DC Bar, & the 1st woman admitted to practice before the US Supreme Court. She taught at a @HowardU prep school & graduated from @howardlawschool. A trailblazer!

On this date in 2021, we lost Mary Vann, the Council’s Director of Legislative Services, who had served on the Council’s staff since 1984. She was a meticulous, dedicated, & soft-spoken guardian of the Council’s records, including our interactions with Congress. We miss her.

*51* years ago today, the first-ever modern Home Rule District government was sworn in by Justice Thurgood Marshall. Among this august group were two then/future mayors (W. Washington and M. Barry) and four then/future Council Chairs (S. Tucker, D. Clarke, J. Wilson, & A. Dixon)

After quickly tearing up a number of boxes for recycling, I found this in the pile. Saved from the trash, destined to be reborn.

Desperate for a good omen for 2026, I will accept this one for DC.

Born on this date in 1969: Cool "Disco" Dan. He was legendary, an icon of the "real," non-federal DC—the District, not Washington. If there was a Mount Rushmore of late 20th Century hometown DC, it would include Dan!
