story mode is separated into 42 chapters, but you don't have to read them all in order, most of the time, you'll have multiple chapters to choose from, based on what you've read so far :)

Heatwave's last major update, will be available on NOVEMBER 12!!! It will also be releasing on steam then as well. Most notably, it will contain a ~100k word visual novel story mode, and 4 new "secret" characters, along with balance changes, and bug fixes. ❤️

It is a bit more work, yes, but I am a big pusher for lots of options for the player. Let them have the experience they want (as best can be accommodated). If they want to do 99 minutes of all attacks boosted to instant death, let them.
