Trust me, the woman of academia are not at all surprised by the number of academic men orbiting Epstein.

And, please, please, please, an additional register of places is not the same as a Sachregister! (Also, some Czech-language authors, please note!!)
Liebe deutsche Autoren, im Namen der Wissenschaft bitte ich Sie: Führen Sie in Ihren Büchern nicht nur Personenregister, sondern auch Sachregister.

On Feb 22 I'll be talking with Kobi Kabalek about his stimulating and even potentially controversial new book. The event is online and anyone can attend. My comments will be informed by debates on German popular opinion and the connection between Holocaust memory and historiographical trends.

Lithuanian Olympic uniforms by Issey Miyake for the 1992 games in Barcelona. This was Lithuania's first time in the Olympics after gaining independence from the Soviet Union. Fabric was cut and shaped using heat, not scissors or sewing machines.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

PS Sometimes I'm paid, not much, but that's ok, too. Providing useful feedback to others comes w/ the job, I'd think. And you get to read fun stuff! It's like refereeing grant proposals!

I review a 1-2 book manuscripts/proposals a year in exchange for actual books. Same number of article manuscripts. I sometimes blurb books, never using "brilliant" to describe them, but employing a less overused word. 😀 It's a habit of service to the profession. Helps other authors as I was helped.
Just had to send another of those replies to a request for peer review: "The book sounds interesting, but I’m afraid I don’t exchange my labour for free e-books. The amounts paid in cash for such work are pitiable enough.” sigh

Friendly amendment: Specialist Tim Snyder is correct, but I'd use "left" rather than "fled." They had job offers.

Why ppl really should read/learn at least some Shakespeare. Sir Ian McKellen is amazing here. Savor this moment.
Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

My watercolour drawing of a pergola at the back of an Arts and Crafts house in Storey's Way, Cambridge. The architect of this beautiful house was M. H. Baillie Scott in 1912-13. The watercolour was completed on a sketch group visit in 2014 and I still have it.

Would we be in this situation if all of you people who just couldn't bring yourself to support the well-educated, experienced brown lady could just have gotten over yourselves and voted for her? BTW, the smart people are investing in gold leaf. You know, for future statues.

Czech Silesia, the one the Gentlemen's Coalition collapsed into Moravia in the late 1920s? More centralization; fewer German-speaking voices? That Silesia?
