Just published in the Journal of Genocide Research: my lead article for a forum I organized. In the coming days/weeks, there will be 4 responses from Victoria Barnett, Jürgen Matthäus, Amos Morris-Reich and Mate Zombory, followed by my reply

On Feb 22 I'll be talking with Kobi Kabalek about his stimulating and even potentially controversial new book. The event is online and anyone can attend. My comments will be informed by debates on German popular opinion and the connection between Holocaust memory and historiographical trends.

Trump isn't following the Hitler script insofar as the script is very common amongst all dictators, and not just fascists. Stalin very famously involed the memory of being surrounded by Western powers during the earlier civil war to justify terror tactics in the 1930s (and other moments too).
A dominant theme of Hitler's speeches in the late 1930s is that Germany was surrounded by threats. These threats were imaginary: it was Nazi Germany that threatened other nations. But they were used to justify pre-emptive attacks. Trump is following this script.

And now there is some coverage of my work in a Spanish Jewish outlet, which appears to have translated the Jerusalem Post piece: itongadol.com/cultura/como...

Can anyone recommend Viennese archives which have a collection of Jewish (and "Jewish") ego-documents? I've got the VWI, IKG, DOEW, anything else?

I asked our university's official AI assistant to draw a map of Poland in 1941.

Great stuff. Glad we are steering our students toward this helpful resource.

Very surprised but grateful that the Jerusalem Post of all newspapers has written a favourable piece on my recent Journal of Genocide Research article. It seems they really understood the spirit behind it, even if they slightly misread the specifics:

Nazi rules on half-Jews and quarter-Jews still define Jews | The Jerusalem Post
Under Nazi law, these people were grouped under the term "Mischlinge" and bureaucratically labelled as “half-Jews” or “quarter-Jews,” depending on how many grandparents were recorded as Jewish.

Historians on hiring, tenure, and promotion committees should be cautious about relying on Google Scholar, and we need to fight against others using it to assess us. I just noticed three citations to my articles in an American Historical Review article by Jo Guldi, and none show up in my profile.

This tweet is one of many examples of why it's necessary to portray accurately the way the Nazi definition of "Jew" differed greatly from Jews' definition of Jew. People throw their hands up in horror at the suggestion that we should use scare quotes around every use of the Nazi definition 1/2

Charlie Kirk called me a ‘lunatic’ and a ‘prostitute’ and demanded I be deported.

Nothing, *nothing*, justifies killing him, or robbing his kids of their dad.

We don’t know the identity or motive of the shooter but murder can *never* be the response to political disagreements.
