Forhad Hussain ought to have spoken out by now on the current genocide in Gaza. This meant distancing himself from the national Labour Party, even though he owes his position – as an imposed candidate for Mayor – to them, not to a local selectorate.

No “Forhad bump” in the Plaistow South by-election
Following the very sad death of Neil Wilson in July, Labour have lost the Plaistow South by election to a group called the Newham Independents who have now won a third by election in the Borough si…

Genuinely don’t understand why the council’s comms team are being used to address what is an internal Labour Party matter.

"A team emerged via a deselection battle within the Labour Party that brought together a diversity of talents and skills which had had little outlet in the Robin Wales era, and yet the new Mayor insisted only her own talents and skills were required."

The 2nd Mayor of Newham
When Rokhsana Fiaz became Mayor of Newham all the other directly elected Mayors (DEMs) of London Boroughs were white men. As was her predecessor, Sir Robin Wales, who had hung on as Mayor too long …

My road has been partly closed due to Thames Water works. Cars can’t get through, but pedestrians and cyclists can. Already noticeable how much quieter it is. An #LTN would make this pleasant change permanent but the council is too cowardly.

Given the likely extension of the closure I'm glad that TfL are now working on a better diversion with Newham Council.

When other personalities have sought escalation and conflict, the outgoing Newham Council O&S Chair and the outgoing Chief Whip Labour have separately used their positions to cool high political temperatures on many occasions.

As the Mayor to a city of more than one million Catholics, I want to express my sadness, and the sadness of all Londoners, at the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. He was a man of courage and humility who demonstrated how cooperation between faiths was a force for good.

There has been much discussion, and quite a few YouTube videos, on the eyebrow-raising Silvertown Cycle Bus. This from Jon Stone is surely the best so far. Not much use for Newham despite being near some excellent new cycle schemes in the Royal Docks.

Once again: Less road capacity means less traffic and less congestion and less pollution.

Traffic data from Hammersmith Bridge expose the ludicrous situation where building Silvertown Road tunnel is being paid for by tolling Londoners to use Silvertown AND Blackwall tunnels to MANAGE DEMAND.
Hammersmith Bridge hasn't made traffic worse. Nearby bridges all showing less traffic since 2018, in new TfL data.

Heading home from a vigil organised by @londoncycling.bsky.social for a young man in his twenties killed while cycling in Stratford, east London.

I’m struck by the terrible loss and trauma for families and friends affected and how stupid it is that Vision Zero is not yet even vaguely a reality.
