The reason California high speed rail costs so much is not because of the train but because the state allowed localities to extort the rail authority for their own stupid projects.
For example - Madera forced HSR to replace a cul-de-sac with a 43 ft wide, 617 ft bridge!

I live in a crummy town that's trying to mitigate light pollution and I kinda hate it. Not being able to escape engine drone 100km from any western city, however... That shit is Fucked
If you ever have the experience of seeing a night sky out in the deep countryside you can understand this; it really is a fundamentally different experience, and I can't imagine it not being formative to people.
