The "player felt a negative emotion for a moment in a playtest, that's now a Pri 1 problem" instinct in AAA prod is a huge tarpit for our industry

Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

While I’m talking storytelling, I’m gonna drop my top five pieces of advice I usually give out:

1. Ingest as much art as you can.

Not just watch/read other things, but also go to a gallery, live show, or some other artist effort even outside of your practice. I was inspired by a dinner recently.

I made a deal with myself that if I can sculpt 10 printable models before my birthday, I can get a resin 3D printer.
The self-bribery I have to do to stick with a new hobby is a little ridiculous.. but so far it seems be working as this is already 5/10 😉

I wish I didn't tie self-worth to productivity, but damn does that dopamine hit hard.

My AInxiety game project is coming along well, the zoo is all tuckered out, and this practice piece is coming out way better than anticipated.

You cannot "win" or "lose" the tech race; you either make life better for people or you don't.

Hopefully I can brighten up your timeline and little bit with some pictures of our new pup Athena whom we adopted last Christmas and who might be the sassiest husky in the world.

It's been almost 2 years without any social media, and while I think it's been good to wean off my brain, it's also been really isolating.

I have to admit, part of it is the minor anxiety around AI and desire to learn new skills again. (Such as 3D sculpting)

“How many dudes have you slept with?”

“That dude over there punched that other dude.”

“Dude stole my wallet!”

“Dude scored big!”

If you honestly say you read any of those and didn’t automatically assume dude = guy, you’re lying to yourself.

And making excuses for not wanting to be better.

COVID: It's That Bad

"This is the fight of a generation. If we have history books in 50 years, this will be the story of the 2020s, how our governments tried to cover up the biggest public health failure in a century"

The job's been horrid lately (tasks, not people). Even playing games was just making me sad.
So instead of going to bed and recuperating like a normal person, I ended up procrastinating and painting for the first time in ages. Just 1 more day until I'm done for the year!

It’s ok if you feel numb. We’re being gaslit about an ongoing pandemic, watching a brutal genocide, the wealthiest and most powerful people in the world are white supremacists, and we all still have to go to work. It’s ok to feel powerless and frustrated. Please take care of yourself.

We likely already have more than a 'thousands Mozarts,' but many lack the time or financial resources to express their talent, often working for minimum wage at disgusting companies like Amazon.

A real thing, now turned off for me. Heads-up appreciated! I wish Squarespace had bothered to send a heads-up.
Hey Squarespace users! Did you know Squarespace opted you into being crawled by AI bots without telling you?

I didn't...

There are so many game developers whose names and contributions you'll never know, and many who CHOOSE to not be online. Being publicly visible does not equate to impact on the medium.
