Just looking for community and ways to stave off the slide into fascism. Plus baking, crochet, books, podcasts, and other distractions.
“The institutes. Scientists definitely. The girls can be forced to testify on video,” Epstein replied, adding more ominously, “I’ll explain face to face. If they need encouragement.”

That just gave me a chill head to toe.

I will never forget having to edit Jamal’s final, posthumous piece for the Washington Post, after he was murdered.

He was calling for free expression in the Arab world. You can read it here :

Opinion | Jamal Khashoggi: What the Arab world needs most is free expression
The Arab world needs a modern version of the old transnational media so citizens can be informed about global events.

We threatened to take their sovereignty and make them a state!
CNN: If Canada moves away from the US, more towards China in terms of a trading relationship, is that good for the US?

KEVIN HASSETT: What is good for the US is getting Canada to start to adhere to their previous agreements and to follow the rule of law ... they've been rude and dismissive

The idea that whoever and whatever emerges victorious from an election is therefore good and legitimate betrays an incredibly empty understanding of what democracy is supposed to be, stripped of all substantive commitments that actually make it democratic.

I’m sorry, what???? Are we going to Go Fund Me the military now?
Trump: "By the way, a friend of mine called us the other day and he said 'I'd like to contribute any shortfall you have because of the Democrat shutdown. I'd like to contribute any shortfall you have with the military.' Today, he sent us a check for $130 million. It's gonna go the military."

The No Kings rallies around the country remind me of the things that are actually good in this country. That there ARE good people here and not just a vindictive government elected by people who want to hurt their neighbors at home and abroad.

"This is not who we are" is the same useless palliative as "thoughts and prayers." This is obviously very much who we are, and who we have been for generations. The question is, what will it take to become a nation for whom that is no longer true? And which of our leaders are ready to chart the way?

For everyone saying political violence has no place in this country…

Remember two Democratic legislators were shot in Minnesota just this year.

And America shrugged and moved on.

If pundits would like to talk about violence, a terrorist recently shot up the CDC and another assassinated Democratic officials in Minnesota but they sort of let both stories disappear

Not as threatening as motorbikes in DC I know but maybe we could circle back?

I cannot emphasize enough that the playbook being used against mRNA vaccines (and vaccines in general) is IDENTICAL to the playbook used to restrict voting rights after the 2020 election: actively sow public distrust, then cite the distrust you sowed as an independent reason for your desired policy
Opinion | Jay Bhattacharya: Why the NIH is pivoting away from mRNA vaccines
As a vaccine for broad public use, mRNA technology has failed to earn the public’s trust.

I believe one of the new mRNA vaccines was expected to treat colon cancer, and another had the potential to keep pancreatic cancer from recurring. That’s what they’re taking away.

It is extremely important. It’s the bedrock of self-expression.

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

I've long maintained that the key message is: "why do Republicans hate democracy?" But now, as every admin action undermines our health, safety, and security, and there has been no single action intended to improve our lives, this is the more pertinent frame: paulwaldman.substack.com/p/republican...
Republicans Hate You
That's it - that's the message.
