As a public service, I am reading Scott Beardsley’s book on higher education.

Just as Beardsley sacrificed a lucrative career at McKinsey to take a $700k a year job as Dean of Darden on his way to the very sketchy appointment as UVA president, I paid $12 for the kindle edition of “Higher Calling.”

Last year Neal Kassel wrote an op-ed in support of Craig Kent titled “Kent and Kibbe are the best leaders UVa Health has had in 40 years”

the logic of his position is that you would them abandon those issues and so on and so on until you’ve fully sacrificed a group of vulnerable americans to reactionary bullies for the sake of a percentage point (if that)
Like this. "You must strategically abandon the specific issues that the right has rendered toxic & focus on others."

But then ... why wouldn't the right just be able to do the same thing on those other issues?

The beginning of Ramadan & Lent coincide this year. I like the idea that Muslims & Christians all over the world are entering these seasons of prayer, reflection, penitence, & fasting at the same time. I hope it's a sign of better days to come.
Ramadan Mubarak.
Have a blessed Lent.

Essential to “work smarter, not harder” is understanding deeply what the “not harder” part entails

I’m at the city council meeting to listen to the Affordable Dwellings Unit Tax Abatement Program Proposal Presentation (yes that’s the title). Underneath all of this is the question of how to Charlottesville’s Inclusionary Zoning policies work well.

This captures something so quintessential about local government, social media, and political literacy.

I’ve had a theory for awhile that the current era’s ultra rich will be remembered a hundred years from now mainly as being useless assholes
Extraordinarily wack that these tech zillionaires are not funding modern Carnegie Libraries all over the Bay Area.

Every museum, school, hospital, and library within 100 miles of the intersection of Sand Hill Road and El Camino Real should have a brand new wing named for one of these dudes.
pretty stunning chart

I do appreciate that local media has largely gotten it right that the blame falls on CCS, not CEA. The facts make that clear.
February 16, 2026 at 12:52 PM
You’re spot on! And also CEA had no interest in this becoming a very public dispute - that was all on the school division
