US opposition figures and US allies defend their quiescence in response to Trump's tyranny by saying that there is no point aggravating him. "Our best protection is not standing up to him", they argue. But ex-US Labor Secretary @rbreich.bsky.social says the opposite is the case.
Where the hell are America's leaders?
Too many people with formal authority are intimidated by Trump or sucking up to him. That leaves you and me and everyone else without official power to resist his tyranny

If the US moves on Greenland - controlled by NATO’s Denmark - how would its alliance partners react? Where does Australia stand on AUKUS against a Washington gone rogue? With the US trashing international law and its own constitution, at what point do the US joint chiefs of staff move on Trump?

The US global empire has declined beyond recuperation. Trump hides a retreat to a western hemisphere empire by war on Venezuela. But just as wars lost in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine did not stop US's empire's decline, wars in Latin America wont stop decline there either.

So the emerging picture seems to be: Trump Admin imagines it struck a deal with elements of Maduro's regime to hand him over and stay in power, in exchange (presumably) for inviting US oil companies back and stopping oil supplies to Cuba ....

Who can argue against the principle of bringing to justice rogue presidents who defy the rule of law, disrespect the outcome of democratic elections, employ the military to silence their critics, indulge in nepotism and use their positions to enrich themselves??

Essential analysis on the Venezuelan situation. Trump may have removed Maduro but the regime is still in place and the country is a mess. The notion that Trump’s incompetent henchmen can ‘run’ Venezuela is insane. www.youtube.com/live/okFXXXW...

Unless they know something I don’t, aren’t they getting a little ahead of themselves? The Maduro regime - minus Maduro - appears to still exist, and there are no U.S. troops on the ground to say otherwise.

Remember, it's the same people who were shocked at Russia illegally invading Ukraine who are now gloating over the US illegally invading Venezuela.

They have no principles, no scruples, no morals at all. And they head every western state.

Supposedly Australia’s alliance with the USA is based on shared principles about democracy and the rule of law. Where does that sit now? Senator Wong? Anybody home in Canberra??

We live in a hall of mirrors: Trump is justifying Maduro’s arrest because the latter is a crook who defied the outcome of a democratic election, stole from his people and associated with gangsters.

It's an old and obvious pattern. An unpopular president - failing on the economy and losing his grip on power at home - decides to launch a war for regime change abroad.

The American people don’t want to “run” a foreign country while our leaders fail to improve life in this one.

Donald Trump cannot be trusted to lead America into war. He is unaccountable to America. He is lawless. He only seeks conflict to cover up for his failures. Congress must step up and reassert its power. No more forever wars.

The US has launched an unprovoked and illegal attack on Venezuela.

This is a brazen attempt to secure control over Venezuelan natural resources.

It is an act of war that puts the lives of millions of people at risk, and should be condemned by anyone who believes in sovereignty & international law.

Australia is ‘seeking security’ in the Asia Pacific by paying hundreds of billions in protection bribes to a mobster in Washington who just staged an illegal coup in Venezuela to control its oil. Is there anyone in the ALP with a spine? #FlushAUKUS

All the talk is just theatre so long as it is clear that Putin has no interest in ending the war. Why would he? He clearly has Trump on a string. The only way this war stops is if the US and Europe send an unequivocal message to Russia. www.nytimes.com/2025/12/24/w...

The AFR really has it in for Albo over Bondi, accusing him of “forfeiting his moral authority” and going soft on anti-semitism to appease Muslim voters over the Gaza “war”. That would be the genocide that Australians across the board, including many Jews, have condemned. www.afr.com/politics/fed...
