No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

Folks can stay mad, we recognize and remember still ❤️🖤💚

"US mathematician Gladys Mae West was best known for her foundational work on GPS systems. As an African American woman, West overcame huge barriers to contribute to this key technology." 👇🏾

Exactly 93yrs ago today, Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany

German-Jewish antifa author Lion Feuchtwanger was on book tour in the U.S. when it happened

He realized, all of a sudden, that he would likely never return to Germany

And he never did

It's weird how personal history works out

Farewell 2025! The challenges, the stats and my favourite reads of the year! — Runalong The Shelves
Helllooo! Another year passes and I have to say this was a bit of hard one. We lost our beloved dog Maisie, I had a parent in hospital, work had a number of unexpected challenges and I even caught a ...

Perhaps that, in the uk, the national TV channels would stop broadcasting late at night and start again in the early hours.

The day’s broadcasting would end with the announcer wishing the viewers a very good night before the national anthem was played …

Also, smoking on airplanes.
What’s a real thing from your childhood that kids these days would find completely foreign?

Like, how we used to be able to walk right up to the gate to meet our family coming off a flight.

Or how we had to pick a spot to meet at the theater BEFORE we went.

Today I learned IDW is in fact still putting out single issues of THE HUNGER AND THE DUSK digitally! With very little fanfare. So little in fact that even I was unaware. Anyway Book 2 Issue 4 (of 6) is out now! The collected print edition will be out as soon as we've wrapped up the final issue.

For anybody trying to keep costs down/limit carbon emissions but also not melt in the summer, don't wait until it's 90 degrees to turn on the AC. It may feel virtuous, but it takes far more energy to cool a house from 90 to 75 than it does to *keep* a house that is already at 75, at 75.

I once, when working Saturdays at a sports shop while at college, sold Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder, Keith Downing a pair of Reebok trainers. “Psycho” was thoroughly pleasant. I’m not sure a second division footballer even counts but it’s the best I have!
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

This is a fantastic breakdown of learning Japanese as a beginner!

I especially love Brendon's story of how he first tried to throw himself at Japanese and bouncing off it, then working out what worked for him and learning how to learn before trying Japanese again.
after MANY failed attempts throughout the years i've finally landed on a solid foundation for learning japanese.

if you're interested and need some direction, here are the tools i would recommend and the order i'd recommend going through them:
How I’m Learning Japanese 14 Days In - Wavelengths
I’ve tried to learn Japanese a few times over the years, the earliest attempt at which was some time in high school while I was watching an episode of Fullmetal Alchemist and casually looked up how lo...

My #2025 #newyear #resolution is to stop using phrases like “Dillon, leave my feet alone” and, instead, accept that Dillon is a kitten and thus a being of pure chaos rather than an entity with which one can reason. Happy New Year BlueSky!
