The famous green owl app Duolingo is going even harder into AI made by stolen content. It's not curated by native speakers so you have no idea if what you're learning is correct. Their algorithm overall tries to hit the happy brain juices instead of helping you learn. So here are some alternatives!

Ask yourself this: Do you want this to be the future of your anime watching experience, forever? If your answer is no, then act on it! If you are a journalist or anyone with a platform, talk about this! If you know such people, urge them to do so! Use my article as base! Now, before it's too late!

Study burnout is a real issue, but you shouldn't beat yourself up either if you're struggling with it.

I've been studying Japanese for over 19 years but there were many times I didn't do any studying for months on end, sometimes even six months to a year.
This is probably my 4th-5th rewrite of this post.

I've seen so many friends / peers get burnt out on learning Japanese.

It's a big undertaking: you're learning an entirely new language /and/ the culture that's inseparable from it.

I wish I could give one-size-fits-all advice or encouragement.

New YouTube video! I'm hoping to make Fridays a "talk about studying Japanese" day, but we'll see if I can be consistent with that 💦

I love living and working in Japan but no one told me how constantly switching between two languages for nine hours straight would be so exhausting.

I wrote another in this series exploring kanji by different radicals.

Making a Splash: Kanji with the Water Radical (氵)
From ponds (池) to the sea (海), and swimming (泳) to crying (泣), many of Japan’s kanji are connected with water, and include the 氵radical, signifying water droplets.

As a complement to my last post, I regret not taking textbooks seriously when I started studying Japanese. I heard people on YouTube saying that textbooks are useless, like "it's not the true Japanese," then I found a hyperpolyglot explaining his learning process through textbooks with audio. (+)

I've been struggling to study lately and have to constantly remind myself: It's easier to study a language when you make it easy for yourself.

Make time for your studies; set up your study space so it's easy to open your textbook; work on something at your level; give yourself easy victories.

Looking for intermediate Japanese listening material? I can highly recommend Seika's Japanese podcast. It's fairly accessible language-wise, and is fantastic for learning to listen to/decode extended articulations of experiences and thoughts/opinions by a native speaker.

Started using @bunprosrs.bsky.social to help me start studying Japanese again now that I'm back in the states. I'm currently in review hell from adding all the words and grammar points I already knew but it's nice to be studying again.

This is an intensive language program for intermediate level learners based in Yokohama. It's perfect for people who are serious about improving their Japanese so they can work in Japan.
Applications are open for IUC's 10-month Japanese language program. I'm glad to answer any questions about my time there. I pivoted during the pandemic and enrolled the year I turned 40, so it's possible for a wide range of students. iuc.fsi.stanford.edu/programs-10M

Just a heads up, but the Japanese Talk Online site will likely shutdown for a little bit while I try to work out an alternative for hosting.

Bill just came in for £288 to host the sites and I can't pay that much anymore. But I also don't have much time/energy to sort it out before the deadline.

I'm not very good at studying languages by myself.

I really need a deadline and regular lessons to keep me motivated. It's why the JLPT was great when I was studying Japanese because only having it once/twice a year meant I had a strict deadline to work towards.

Language learning is a personal journey, and it will take the time it needs and different forms for every person. There is no singularly most-optimised method that will bring sustainable results quickly.

Also, language learners need to be kind to themselves, as the road is long and winding.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

Just saw a post that said you can't learn Japanese from watching anime and I agree but also don't agree.

Watching any old anime won't be as helpful as slice of life, which can help with more commonly used words and phrases.

AND you still need to study Japanese to actually learn the language.
