Nouvelle Vague was enjoyable but a very silly movie conceptually. Has a similar problem to the SNL movie where it feels like we don't really want to launch anything new and revolutionary today so we make these nostalgic biopics to try and capture a bit of that feeling without taking any actual risk

As I'm sure you're aware, the fifth of January is the day of the Schnabelperchten, a creature of Austrian folklore who will check your house for cleanliness. If they decide you haven't done a good enough job, they'll slit open your belly and fill it with straw. Happy New Year..!

I further put forward that we be allowed to be a little bit rude about it. look what the obsession with civility has gotten us. if a person is being hateful or saying something untrue, you should be allowed to get a little bitchy if you need to!
my plan to get this country back on track consists of one bullet point: i propose we stop pretending stupid people arent stupid just because theyre loud and theres a lot of them

I was really going to wait longer to post this until I'd added all the examples to github, but since clearly the pace of 2026 may actually outstrip 2025: here is a rough guide to archiving legislative and congressional hearings. 2026 is going to be an all-hands situation. We need eyes on everything.
Streamripping democracy: archiving legislative hearings — Jessica Kant
While people scrambled to the livestreams and, whenever possible, posted updates as they happened, the sheer size and scale of the project was too much for any one person. Even the most well-resourced...

Collectivism as a philosophy or ideology is something I've been thinking about more and more the past few months, mostly in the context of how film grew as a medium but also more generally, the Mamdani speech really calls to mind how much we're going to have to leave individualism behind to survive

About 200 people are rallying in downtown Seattle to denounce U.S. military strikes on Venezuela and the kidnapping of its president Nicolás Maduro. The attacks occurred overnight and were authorized by U.S. President Donald Trump. Organizers called for a new anti-war movement to oppose the attacks.

My little project for the year is making my life harder on purpose. I talk about it a little bit here, but the long and short of it is that I think excessive convenience has eroded the quality of everyday life at great cost to our sense of self. I've been referring to it as The Smooth World

At least we don’t live in a world of staggering class disparity in which a tech magnate attempts to quash left-wing sentiment using sexualized artificial intelligence!

would be very funny conceptuallg to get sworn in on a copy of The Dispossessed
Ok, everyone, what book is sacred enough to you to get sworn in on?
Strange takes on Mayor Zamdani swearing his oath on the Qu’ran. It has nothing to do with church & state. The point of the oath is for the person swearing in to do so upon some text that is sacred TO THEM. Some Presidents swore in w/o any book. John Quincy Adams was sworn on a law book. His choice.

One of my goals this year has to be to get confident with writing more quickly. I have a bad habit of second guessing myself to the point of inaction.

It's so fucking refreshing, and so fucking cool, to see a politician that loves the city he lives in and represents. Cities are the Real America. Both in practice and in the ideal.
Mamdani: Where else can you hear the sound of the steel pan, savor the smell of sancocho, and pay $9 for coffee on the same block? Where else could a Muslim kid like me grow up eating bagels and lox every Sunday?
