Everyone who actually makes TV and films: “we can reduce production costs if you commission original, lower budget projects, are willing to back actors who aren’t household names, and dial back on bland VFX spectacle in favour of artistry”

This sort of genre cinema and practical effects I grew up with in the 1980s and 90s was something tremendously special.

The handcrafted nature of creature makeup and puppetry lent a surreal authenticity to everything.

I will always love it.

Audre Lorde, in a 1989 commencement address, said, "Remember this, despair is a tool of your enemies. That rumor, 'You can’t fight City Hall,' is circulated by City Hall. Facing the realities of our lives gives us the motivation for action, it gives us the power to change. You are not powerless."

When met w/ a no win situation or a double standard, one can choose to give up, or conform to the path of least resistance, or there is the third option of realizing how much freedom there is in that situation.

It feels weird to celebrate this right now? but it feels good and I'm excited. I needed to put the momentum I was trying to build last year on hold and so this is a good way to start the year.

I'm not being cute or woo or Pollyanna here.

Relationships are how you build political power.

They are incapable of building deep relationships, which means they are ultimately incapable of building deep and lasting power.

They eventually turn on each other and destroy themselves.

I think one of the reasons hobbits have endured and appeal to people even today is because of this. They farm, eat, fuck, party, and garden. They like a good yarn and a pub crawl. They overall enjoy just living.
I think about this post a lot.

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is stay soft in a world that keeps asking you to harden up.

Pay attention to what steadies you — a quiet moment, a voice, a song — and keep those things close. They ain’t escapes; they’re anchors.
