I'm worried that the broader public isn't really understanding the Epstein Files. The problem isn't that everyone in the files is a secret pedophile, it's that all the people are corresponding with him because they *don't care that he's a pedophile*. It's a story of elite impunity.
You can look at the Epstein files and conclude that only bad people have billions of dollars, but I think it’s also possible that having billions of dollars cauterizes your humanity

Real CTE moment here for Scouting America, maybe.
As an Eagle Scout, let me say this is an opportunity for Scouting America to stop having a partnership with the U.S. Military.
Breaking news: The Pentagon issued a warning to Scouting America, formerly known as the Boy Scouts, saying the organization risks losing its long-standing partnership with the U.S. military unless it rapidly implements “core value reforms.”

Bad things professionally should happens to lawyers who misrepresent the law to the public like this. He has ethical duties to keep that license of his to practice law. Be a shame if he had to defend this to a state/federal bar!

If I'm honest, I don't want to share a society with these people.
“A majority of delegates from Manitoba, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island and the territories” opposed the social conservative motion to repeal the ban on conversion therapy, causing it to be defeated.
The federal Conservatives are overhauling their policy playbook. Here's what's changing | CBC News

This. This is the precise problem. It's not like the US was a flawless entity that was easy to deal with before, but there's been a state change (in the physical sense of the phrase) now that has made it not merely impossible to trust the administration, but to trust the voting body as a whole.
New in PN: Trump blames Canada

"It isn’t just Trump that Canada can’t trust. It’s us, the American people. Trump may have low approval now, but his numbers were even worse after J6 and we still returned him to power. At this point, no one can have faith that everything will go back to normal."
Trump blames Canada
And tears our closest international relationship apart.

Nisi is the best, and this project sounds hella cool.
Nisi Shawl is a visionary brilliant author, editor, critic and teacher, who is working on a book of otherworldly philosophy that sounds incredible.

Not surprisingly, this project has grown and flowered, and Nisi needs a bit more support. Please help if you can!

Exactly. People keep talking about “TACO,” but the “CO” never lasts for longer than a few days before he doubles down again.
Mentally declining and also never having inclined old man starts to freak out over bad “public relations” about the murder squad he assembles, then sees things on the tv and shown things online that get him Mad, yelling at the tv, engaging in yet more whiny fascism, rinse repeat
Trump is clearly distancing himself from the bad pr of noem and miller, he’s not calling Alex Pretti a terrorist he’s calling him an insurrectionist who had it coming.

Big difference in style and substance here

A disconnect I'm seeing right now, and maybe I'm going to try to dig into in the next while, is housing demand in NL. Listening to The Signal from the other day, one of the guests stated she thought that 500-1000 units would make a significant dent in the need.

It hadn't even occurred to me that the whole Venezuelan oil thing could be an end run around the need to involve the US Congress in funding for Trump's actions, which is a good reality check on how well I understand what's happening south of the border. But wow, that's got terrifying implications.

In general, all-or-nothing thinking is not functional thinking. Canada tends to better on that score than the US, and it would be nice to get a little more distance to ensure it stays that way.
It’s a matter of geography. Even if Carney can shift the percentage of trade 15-20% away from the US that will be a HUGE shift. The 9-9% we’ve seen already is significant.

I mean, 32% of Taiwan’s trade is still with China. That’s down from 44% n 2000.

This will take time.
It could be easier said than done for Canada to diversify trade ties away from US
• Ottawa is doubling down on inking trade deals to reduce reliance on US export market
• Yet US absorbs 65-70% of Canada's exports, meaning de-risking efforts will take time

I guess what I'm saying is, if we can't tax legendarily rich assholes into the ground, can we at least make them shut the fuck up and go the fuck away?

I haven't listened to a CBC program regularly in quite a while, but I have to say, whatever shit I might give him in terms of specifics, @adamfwalsh.bsky.social is kind of killing it in terms of selecting topics to cover on The Signal.

I know there are a lot of reasons to dislike AI, but on a whim I checked Bruce Schneier's site for the first time in a very long time and...yeah. These form a pretty terrifying cybersecurity threat that maybe should be front of mind for folks making policy around AI?

When GMing, make your world feel more authentic by putting animals in it. In a battle, it's not just warriors that are dying—it's horses. Afterwards, crows and dogs are there to feed on the carrion—maybe even carrion crawlers.

Animals live with us in every capacity. Enrich your world with them.

Not a bad list, really. I can find fault in a few places, but most or all of these would assuage my concerns quite a lot.
"What exactly do you expect Carney to do / not do?"

A thread of 50 specific items (with links, and not in any particular order), a large fraction of which are in line with warning signs we pointed out early on and were told to be quiet, wait and see, or trust his 4D chess acumen.

I love to see a new cover of a Stan Rogers song. And in the same moment I find it hard to enjoy a "pretty" version. Stan Rogers' performances appeal to me in part because they have meat and gristle and grit.

This is a me problem, I know.
