Constructed in 1959 by Jacek Karpiński and Janusz Tomaszewski it was the world's first transistorised differential equations analyzer.
Background
Karpiński built the device at the Polish Academy of Science's Institute of Automatics. AKAT-1 aimed to simulate various complex dynamic processes like thermodynamics, heat transfer or a shock absorber's mechanics.
The device's innovativeness was acknowledged by computer science historians, e.g. Maciej Sysło claims it has to be conceded that Karpiński's effort preceded any other similar device.[3] The construction was also lauded for its aesthetical merits. The panel designed by leading Polish artists Emil Cieślar, Olgierd Rutkowski, Stanisław Siemek and Andrzej Wróblewski at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts had been considered to 'innovatively merge all functions in a congruent and attractive form that anticipated the future trends'. Just finished the pluribus finale. What a show! So original. So well written. So well executed. It treats the audience like intelligent human beings and not fickle pigs at a trough. It also knows that making a “smart” show doesn’t mean making an overly complicated, pretentious, self serious show.

Holy fuck the predators doc on paramount+ is ROUGH! A fascinating examination and contemplation on whether the ppl making to catch a predator and its subsequent imitators are not in fact heroes, but morally vacant sociopaths and predators in their own right. It’s great, but hoo boy is it GRIM.

I’ve always found the NORAD tracking Santa thing an extremely cringe infringement of the military on a religious holiday. I just don’t think the tech used to track ICBMs is cute and fun for kids. But continuing it in 2025 it’s downright Verhoeven-esque.

It’s weird, and in retrospect catastrophic, that news never really reported on news media. Like, the most popular cable news channel being a right wing propaganda spreading/fear generating machine should have been a big story. But they all just pretended it wasn’t happening. And now they are them.
