Today's news in "local elections matter a lot."

The town council of Franklin in western NC voted unanimously to return a piece of town property to the Eastern Band of Cherokee.

It was not "domestic terrorism.” It was state sanctioned violence.

A family will forever live with the pain caused by the admin's reckless and deadly actions.

Abolishing ICE is not enough. They must be held accountable.

AOC: This has now become what we feared most about ICE for a long time—that it would be used as an anti-civilian force with no accountability. At the end of the day, what we saw today was a murder, and murders in cold blood need to be prosecuted.

I am impeaching Secretary Kristi Noem, who is an incompetent leader and a disgrace to our democracy.

She wreaked havoc in the Chicagoland area and has brought her reign of terror to Minneapolis. One of her rogue ICE agents shot and killed an innocent woman today. It must come to an end.

This is very distressing news about RAICES, an organization that I’ve funded and recommended to others looking to help immigrants. I will be canceling my monthly donation.
Our first investigation of the year just landed, and it’s a doozy.

More than 1,000 children across Texas were affected by this.

Through interviews with more than a dozen former employees and the review of internal documents and court records, The Barbed Wire found:

More Venezuelan coverage from Venezuelans: the @globalvoices.org team has been putting this together in between venturing out to the streets to stock up on supplies and check the mood in the capital. There has already been a fresh round of journalist detentions so this is under the team byline.
Venezuela after Maduro: Leadership of the South American nation seems uncertain
Since the airstrikes, there has been a huge sense of uncertainty, with long queues in local supermarkets and gas stations, and Caracas residents worried about basic necessities like groceries.

Rarely have I encountered anything so ripe for memeification !

"Mind if I _sabotage vaccine public health messaging_?"
Not to be all “back in my day”, but every time I watch an old movie and they say “mind if I smoke?” I instantly flash back to a PSA on buses in the 90s. And I feel like we need this kind of blunt messaging on public health stuff.

It WORKED. It’s still in my head 30 years later.

2025 was mostly garbage, but there were some good moments.

One of my favorites was when a family of beavers built a dam in just a few days, saving the Czech Republic 30 million Czech koruna (US$1.2 million) for a wetland restoration project the government had been planning for 7 years. 🦫 🌿
These eager beavers saved the Czech government $1.2 million
After plans stalled for a new dam in the Czech Republic, eight beavers saved the day seemingly overnight. “At this point, nothing that beavers do surprises me.”
