“If we’re lost, then we are lost together.” Swinger of birches and just a painter passing through. Living in Calgary, Alberta (Treaty 7). Opinions my own.

2025 was mostly garbage, but there were some good moments.

One of my favorites was when a family of beavers built a dam in just a few days, saving the Czech Republic 30 million Czech koruna (US$1.2 million) for a wetland restoration project the government had been planning for 7 years. 🦫 🌿
These eager beavers saved the Czech government $1.2 million
After plans stalled for a new dam in the Czech Republic, eight beavers saved the day seemingly overnight. “At this point, nothing that beavers do surprises me.”

Calgarians are currently living in a monochromatic world.
Hoar frost or rime ice makes for a very different look to the world.

Because Magpies are such adaptable urban birds I’m always surprised when I don’t see them in BC. Turns out they co-evolved with bison and now like it here on the prairie so much they stay home.
Magpies rule the Prairies. Here's why they won't go national | CBC News
Love them or hate them, it's hard to go a day in Calgary without seeing magpies or hearing their iconic screech. They've adapted to live in the Prairie provinces year-round, but they haven't been able...

Calgary, our water system is in the RED ZONE. We need your help to conserve water! Ways that you can assist:

-Keep showers short, three minutes or less.
-Flush toilets only when necessary.
-Run dishwashers/laundry only when full

Thank-you, Calgary! These small actions make a big difference.

I’m anticipating a gritty TV series of Nancy Drew. Lots of violence & sex.
Cool stuff entering public domain:
Betty Boop
Nancy Drew + her first 5 novels
The Maltese Falcon novel
Disney's first iteration of Pluto as "Rover"
The first fully voiced Academy Best Picture: All Quiet on the Western Front
The Marx Brothers' Animal Crackers
Dream a Little Dream of Me
I Got Rhythm
🕛 At midnight, new creative works enter the public domain in the US.

🎙️ In the latest Future Knowledge podcast, James Boyle (The Public Domain) explains why the public domain matters & how digital enclosures are quietly fencing it off.

Open up this picture fully.

Then look at the surface of Mars.

Then look up to the top right.

Spot Mars' moon Phobos high in the sky.

Then notice the bright spot beside Phobos.

That's Earth.

Puffins are social, so to attract them to Maine's rocky islands, National Audubon's Seabird Restoration Program put out decoys to attract real birds.

This puffin is trying to fit in with his new friend by standing on one leg.

I am interested in working with an artist on a graphic novel on soil and/ or global environmental change. The lab would have money to fund this.

Do you know of any graphic artists that would be interested?
