The problem with endlessly litigating the Saving Private Ryan / Shakespeare competition is that there is not a big gulf in quality between the two. *

*in my opinion*

The comedy vs. drama discussions are funny to me. Yes, of course ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER is a comedy, plus a couple other things. Yes, The Bear is as much a comedy as it is a drama most of the time. These things happen!

I have discovered that texting close friends and asking "hey, you want to go with me to The Bone Temple?" is not being interpreted the way that I intend it.

In the 1920s, automat cafeterias were among the first public places where women could dine alone. Automat (1927) captures that new urban freedom—and the reflective loneliness that came with it. Is this what it feels like to be free?

Hmmm…think I’m going to mark this voicemail transcription “not useful”

(It was a robocall saying “bye”)

It seems wild to me that Tessa Thompson & Nina Hoss aren't locks for all the awards nominations for Hedda -- these are easily two of my favorite performances of the year, and ones I find myself thinking more and more about over time

Trying to finish a big school project at the last minute without the internet.

Oh, wait! It just so happens I made an award-winning short film about that:

Check it out here and on @tcmtv.bsky.social, because they hit the bullseye.

Sorry folks. Some times awards groups make absolutely terrific choices. I also wish they didn't muddy the waters like this, but it is what it is.

This year could've been a nail-biter between Life of Chuck and Rental Family while we sat back smugly enjoying Marty Supreme. Alas, it was not to be.

People want to position themselves in contrast to the boring, middlebrow mainstream so any Oscar favorites become "basic" by definition, even when they are obviously not.

This way even daring choices get lumped in with the Green Books and King's Speeches for the sake of narrative consistency.

2025: The Ice Tower

I get YouTube would rather us engage with whatever the algorithm pukes up instead of our actual subscriptions, but now I see they’ve slipped Suggested Viewing on the subscription feed ahead of actual subscriptions!

“Most Relevant”? Fuck off. This bullshit is literally blocking the relevant videos!

Elon Musk promised a lot of things by 2025

- colonists arriving on Mars
- xAI achieving AGI
- Tesla robotaxis serving half the U.S.
- completely driverless robotaxis
- a Tesla Roadster demo
- DOGE cutting trillions

none of them happened

Everything Elon Musk promised in 2025, but didn't deliver
Musk is now infamous for his false promises, but even this is excessive.

one of the underlying premises of One Battle After Another is that revolutionaries are people, not political archetypes, and they are flawed—cowardly, selfish, impatient, short-sighted—in the way people tend to be flawed
one issue with the Takes on OBAA is that it is a layered and dense movie that demands viewers actually watch it and try to take it on its own terms which a lot of people are terminally unable to do

One enjoyable and refreshing feature of One Battle After Another is that we didn’t have to learn about the antagonist’s trauma.
